which modulus? please help me to decide

I need help in choosing a 5 string bass for my son. He plays alternative rock for last 3 years on old Ibanez.
Should I pick Modulus Genesis, Flea or Quantum- reg. or semi hollow?
How much is reasonable for a used one? Like Q5 10 years old and 5 years old.
any opinions,

A Flea or Quantum would be a great choice - I've played them both (and own two flea basses) and love them, however the narrower spacing that comes stock on the flea five gets mixed reviews. The Quantum is a sure bet though, they all sound awesome and there are many alternative rock bands who use them in their lineup.

I've seen them go anywhere from $1000-2000 used, it really depends on condition. There is so much variance because there aren't that many that go up on ebay or to Guitar Center to be sold compared to things like fender, warwick, etc.

+1 to the above. The Quantum is a little more versatile, but the Flea cuts like a knife. My best live tone ever was a Quantum 5. You cannot go wrong with either one. The Genesis will be a little cheaper than the Flea and Q5 and not really the "Modulus" tone. Still a great bass though.

PS. you adopting? I would love to have another modulus. :bassist:

No offense, but YOU shouldn't be the one picking your son's bass - that would be just as bad as you picking his girlfriend! Let your son decide on the bass because, believe me, you're going to be pretty annoyed if he ends up not wanting to play because the bass you've chosen doesn't suit him. All of the basses you've mentioned would be fine (if graphite is what your son likes) - it really comes down to what he will be comfortable playing. One last thing: basses are like pets - they rarely make good "surprise" gifts...

Both are fantastic pro instruments that will last a lifetime. For A 5 String you cannot beat the Quantum. It arguably has the best low B string in the business. For a used Quantum 5 in good shape look to spend any where from $1800.00 to $2600.00

I would be completely satisfied with any modulus that anyone ever wanted to give me and many many other bassist would be also. I think a awesome bass makes a great suprise gift!

PS.I would say the semi hollow may not be the tone choice of alternative rock it has a more ( rounded tone). Not when you could have a Q5.

No offense, but the man can raise his son the way he sees fit. And unless the boy has his own money, There's nothing wrong with the parent choosing his next instrument. If I was 15 playing an Ibanez and my dad came home with a Quantum 5, I'd have a heart attack!
Sounds like he's got a pretty good Dad!

My vote goes for the Quantum 5.... definitely! I bought a used one in great shape last week for $1200. It has a 5A quilted purple/blue burst finish, and sounds like liquid euphoria! I can safely say it's the best bass I've ever played... ever. Either way, if your son turns his nose up at ANY Modulus you GIVE him, he probably shouldn't be playing music in the first place. Good luck

LOL come on man!! If I was playing a squire or ibanez or SX and my dad came home with a modulus, I too would probably have a heart attack/start crying. Have you ever played a modulus? I've never met someone who doesn't like them.

And I'm sure his son has hinted at them :)

What an awesome dad!

I've owned a few Moduli over the years. I would look for them in local music shops used as well as on here (TB) and eBay. I'd try here first since most of us care about our gear...but there are deals to be had on eBay as well. Ask many questions...that is my advice.
