Are they both from the same era? … I think the white would be from the very early run, I had one and was less than impressed, probably liked it the least of the many Squier VM's I had … the natural/maple is that from the time they used the DD pups or the Fender Design? …

I guess if it came down to must keep one, and only one, probably 'the lightest one' unless I completely liked one over the other in terms of sound/playability … I like the aesthetics of the natural one better … but would probably take some wet sandpaper or ScotchBrite to the body and knock the gloss down a bit to a 'satin' … if the neck was high (hopefully not) gloss, I would take it down to nothing … I hated the last couple VM's I got with the high gloss finishes, even on the neck … feels/looks like they dipped them in poly … I also prefer the DD era pups ..
My amber one has satin/non-glossy neck and fingerboard. I'd actually prefer glossy but that's just me! I don't remember what the original pickup was - I have a Fender PV63 in it now.

Initially, white. Seeing Nick's picture made me swing amber. That's tough.
I'm always happy to be bad influence  My one really does have a nice texture & subtle quilt which shows up well in the right light. The amber finish does a good impression of a nicely aged '70s natural ash body (ref - the '74 J next to it!)...mercifully without the weight.

I would pay more than the original list price for the amber one, if there was ever one within buying range. It is the ultimate P-bass to me and I kick myself every day for not buying one when they were around new. (There were reasons.)
Me as well! I had one but stupidly let it go. I have a Fender Cabonita pickup here just waiting for one of those to wander back into my life :)
