Which Short Scale Bass?

I stopped by the local store today and tried the Fender Mustang, the Jackson JS1X, and the Gretsch Junior Jet.

The mustang was nice but I didn't really care for the neck. It was a bit chunkier than I like.

The Jackson was very light, but it felt like, and sounded like, a toy.

The Gretsch felt nice. But, when I plugged it in and played it through an amp. I fell in love with the sound. I did not buy it right then, because I needed to think it over since I hadn't tried all the different models I was interested.

After thinking about on my drive home, and talking it over with my wife, I decided. I just got off the phone with the store. They are going to hold it for me and I will stop after work tomorrow and get it. By this time tomorrow I will have a new Gretsch G2224 Junior Jet II bass in Tobacco Sunburst.

Thanks for all the advice and opinions you have given. It actually helped a lot.

I don't see that as a bad choice, and one I likely would make. Should you ever decide to 'upgrade', pickups for a 'great' short scale might not be the same as for a 34" scale. For a shorty, I really like the TVJones

It's great that you've found a bass to fit you. All the advice in the world doesn't add up to "But, when I plugged it in and played it through an amp. I fell in love with the sound." :bassist:

That's a pretty cool looking little bass, I like that LesPaul single cut look... Nice choice, I hope you enjoy it!

Of your choices, My main bass used to be a USA Jazz, still love and use it. I'm older now hands & back etc. I had a new squire jaguar recently and was very disappointed. Had new Mustang about 5 yrs ago and was pleased (should have kept it). Bought a PJ Mustang use it & like it (flats). Have a 68 Beatle bass and Contemporary Hofner Club. They are way different than a Jazz. The contemporary much heavier with the center block. Just a few months ago bought a Birdsong Cbass, 31" scale. It is what I have been using. Love the feel, neck & weight. Think I would like the Corto2 but they are expensive.
You might want to look at an older Gibson SG ?

I have been dealing with neck and shoulder problems for about 1 1/2 years from an auto accident. My bass is currently a mid 90's Ibanez SR-400. I am very happy with this bass and really don't want to change.

Because of my neck and shoulders, is is sometimes quite uncomfortable having my bass hanging on my shoulders. I have tried many different straps for this, including the different slinger straps and the duostrap. The duostrap works the best, but I am thinking of looking at getting a short-scale bass to see if it would be a little lighter.

The short scale bass I have found are the Ibanez Talman, Ibanez Mikro, Fender Mustang PJ, and the Squier Jaguar. I am hoping to find one of these close enough to where I can try them, but I live in a rural area and there are not that many options close to me.

Are there any other short scale basses I should look at. I want a PJ configuration and I am partial to jazz style necks.

I would also appreciate any comparisons of these basses if you have experience with one or more of these basses.

Thanks

I have a Spector Rebop4. They made the Gary Tallent Signature Model for a few years. Basically an NS4 Bolt-on with a 32 inch scale. Love my Rebop, but sure wish I would have bought the GTS.

I like Ibanez quality for the dollar, but if you are still in transition, you might consider one of the better Chinese imports which you should probably buy directly on the internet. That would save money while you experiment. Alternatively, change the neck on the bass you love. The price point is Chinese stuff bought on the internet, but you can sometimes try at a local store or buy locally for a somewhat higher price. Otherwise, change the neck.

I have the Ibanez Mikro. Love it. Set it up Volume-Blend-Tone. Small body so being a short fat guy it looks like I'm playing a toy. But it sounds great. Also have a Dean Hillsboro Jr that I put all black hardware on. It just has a P pup though. Its my playout bass. Both are strung with halfrounds. No neck dive on either one

I was going to add a vote for various the 30" Silvertone/Danelectro models, including the Asian-built copies. They would have been good, useful options. However, you've already found something that feels good and sounds great to your ear, so there is no need. Congratulations on finding what you wanted!
