I think Bob Branstetter was experimenting with machining composite fingerboards at one stage from corion or similar. Not sure of Bob is still around ... (if you are Bob, hi there!)

*curl leaf mountain mahogany, western species, but rare to find one large enough for a dbl bass.

anyone consider anthracite ? slab cut and shaped, not the soft brown, but the hard as nails black?

Ha. I don't know if they still make them, but a few years ago C.F. Martin & Co. was making a cheap guitar line with laminate necks (like hardwood plywood billets with lots of thick glue lines front to back). It was about as heavy as coal and the guitar was most uncomfortable because of the neck weight and lack of balance. Would be better on a vertical neck though.

Oak tends to splinter. I would be very cautious about using oak as a fingerboard.

Dymondwood is wood veneer impregnated with epoxy and compressed. It comes in various colors, it is used for gun stocks, knife handles and Martin guitars. It is very hard almost like a dense plastic. I've used it for electric bass fingerboard, it is excellent for fretless bass. It is a nasty material to work. You cannot use chisels, planes or files you have to abrade it w/coarse sandpaper, the dust is probably toxic. You can research it, the company is called Rutply.
