Whiskey! Whisky!

We periodically play at the Scottish pub that’s around the corner, and since we get to drink for free, I take the opportunity to try a Scotch that I’ve not tried before. I tend toward smokier Islay products, but I’ll ask the owner or the bartender for suggestions and in recent months I’ve been able to try various Ardbegs, Lagavulin, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Auchentoshan, Oban, Bowmore, Talisker Storm, Big Peat, and others. The owner was gifted a bottle of very hard to get Ardbeg Ardcore, which is absolutely wonderful. I tend to sip slowly and savor, so I don’t get even close to buzzed while we’re playing, most of the sipping happening after our last set.

The same pub has a monthly Whisky Club on the last Thursday of each month where we get to try usually four (this past Thursday was five, and being March they were all Irish whiskies) whiskys. It’s been quite the education.

I'm mostly in to Scotch, of the single malt variety. Right now its Glenmorangie.

Drank bourbon for years - fave was Makers Mark Gold. On tour, after playing, Jameson was great usually always available. Switched to rye about a decade ago, lotsa fine brands these days; favorite was Pikesville.

But sadly, for health reasons, I am unable to drink any alcohol these days.

I quit drinking at gigs long ago. I play (and more importantly, sing) better without it.

Overall, I drink much less than I used to. Something about getting older just makes it that much more impactful. (That, and the fact that alcohol is not a good post-workout recovery drink.) My main "trigger" these days is cooking, which often requires a glass of wine, especially when handling sharp knives (which actually makes me less likely to cut myself).

That said...

and Gin...I love gin.

+1! Mostly in the form of gin & tonic during summertime, or sipping a gin martini.

OMG, I was wondering if someone was going to reference Laphroaig. It's like drinking straight from the peat bog. Ah memories (albeit fragmented ones).

One of the lowest moments ever at a gig: I smelled Ardbeg. My flask had rattled off the amp and cracked at the top. It was a slow, but fragrant, leak. And that was it for that flask. Years of faithful service.

I saved most the scotch, but missed a bridge.

As with my music gear, I never seem to settle down. I love exploring. I also like a good bargain.
Next time I'm ahead on cash, I might like to splurge again on another bottle of Westward whiskey from my home state of Oregon. I have already enjoyed the Pino Noir & Stout varieties.

I play bass. I like (most) whiskey.
Drinking “2BAR” tonight (its distilled in Seattle). Don’t really care for it but “High West” wasn’t available at the store so my wife picked up something new that might be interesting. We’ll get through it though.

I'm a simple hick and I drink Jack. I'll drink smoother whiskeys but I prefer the bite of Jack.

There are indeed some good products coming out of Texas right now.

Garrison is awesome, certainly a splurge.

I like Treaty Oak too. I can't get it retail outside of Texas, so I occasionally buy some when I'm there and carry it home. I can get Balcones at most stores here in Colorado.

We’ve done the wax dip at Garrison before. It was fun for half hour and then it got old but was a nice event.

I had never been to Treaty Oak and first weeks of the lockdown we were bored and drive out and came home with some Ghost Hill and some of their pecan bitters and some of hand sanitizer, of course. Now it’s a habit. Nice folks too.

It’s constantly revolving as something gets emptied and replaced with something else.

Love my Irish whiskeys. Jameson since it’s the most widely available at bars I play.

If I’m playing outdoors (and it’s not frowned upon!) I’ll pull the Duck Dunn and have a pipe in my mouth while playing along with the whiskey.

The drink holder on mic stand adapter on Amazon is perfect for rocks glasses!

I quit drinking all alcohol back in Dec. 2022. About 4 months in and I’m very disappointed. No change; I don’t feel better or worse or different. So, since it didn’t have any effect on me at all that I can tell, I’m now looking for special occasions to have a shot or a beer. Nothing has come up yet, still on the wagon….

Angels Envy Rye is my go to. Second would be Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey.
At the bar I will first ask for whatever Rye they have. If not then Ill go for Jameson Irish.

One issue is that my nick name is Tequila John which is left over from the old days. So I do get my share of Tequila shots showing up on stage.
