White or black bass?

Many believe the less coating on it, the better the timbre.

I've never bought that theory. So many say the wood "breathes" better with less finish on it. Why does dead wood need to breathe and why would that affect the response of an electric instrument anyway?

Black can look good on some basses but it always looks dirty too.

My favorite solid color is vintage cream or off white.

You can go longer between detailing on a white bass. Smudges arent as noticeable. A black finish shows everything fairly immediately.

I gave the edge to black but I love vintage white. I think it contrasts nicely with a white, black or tort pg.

It must be remembered that a white bass may look better initially, but it will discolor to a beige-yellow over time. I do not find that appealing. Whereas black + 30 years = black.

I have to say that I love when they turn yellow.

Black on black with a maple board, and white on white with a rosewood board are two of my favorite color combinations. You need a box for both

Seeing that I frequently wear dark shirts when playing, white bass works best for me. That said, I own four black basses and only one white one. Obviously I don't pay as much attention to the color as I do the playability, sound or cost.

Hmm...my late 1977/early '78 Olympic Jazz Bass is still pretty white. Was never a stark white - pickguard was always whiter, but Bass is not really very yellow yet and it's almost 40-years old.

Hate to break it to you Rip Van Dan, that is an 1982 not 78. The Dots and Binding combo only happened twice at Fender: 1966 and 1982. The 1982 basses still used leftover serials that started with S8. The white plastic parts used from 81-84.

I have both....you needed to give that option. First bass white, current player black, next bass on order - white. I just can't make up my mind.
