Who Actually LIKES Their Guitarists?

Mine is a good friend I've know,n for 30+ years. A great guy well versed in theory and more importantly knows what to play and not to play. He knows how to keep his lines interesting with subtle changes throughout a song.

Yeah, I like him pretty well.

Oh yeah, did I mention he's a district manager for a liquor company? Pretty handy.

I've known my guitarist since I was 5 and he was 7. He was a "frenemy" when we were little but his brother was my age and I spent a lot of time playing basketball and football with them. When I got into junior high and discovered music I went to my friend Tommy for '50's - '70s rock and to my guitarist (Chuck) for heavy metal (mostly Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden).

Chuck has expanded his tastes over the years (we're in our mid-to-late 30s) but he's a heckuva guitarist and we mesh together very well. We also make fun of each other, call each other impolite names, give each other crap about stuff that happened when we were kids and have a great time jamming and writing together.

I've always liked the guitarists in the bands I've been in. I feel like TB often fosters this anti-guitar mentality, as if clashing with guitarists is just our natural lot as bass players. we should not become so absorbed by our identities as bass players that guitarists start to look like the enemies. the highest calling of the bass is to provide rhythmic and harmonic solutions to songs. we're supposed to make things work, not bicker and blame the "guitards".

I do. I have played with 4 different guitarist over the years and 3 of them are great guys to be in a band with. Two of them are close personal friends who I spend a lot of time with doing things unrelated to music. The 4th guy is a great guitarist but he is a guy that I like much more outside of playing music with. He is the most experienced guy and has probably has more talent then I will ever dream of possessing but he is a jerk to be in a band with.

Our guitar player is my best friend. We have almost completely different tastes in music but somehow it comes together to work well. He's somewhat of a musical prodigy and writes the majority of the music with me helping out in giving direction and opinion. He can't solo well but our styles mesh to create some awesome riffs and choruses. Kicker: He's actually a bass player and the one who taught/is teaching me to play. 2nd Kicker: I actually started out playing guitar. Who says you can't do both?

In both my bands I have to say that both my guitarist are pretty straight. Of course there are things that bother me a little bit about how they go about playing certain things at certain times but Im sure they may think the same thing about me at times as well. In the end they both do great jobs in their respective roles in the bands and even sometimes make me proud to play alongside them. Im just happy Im in two bands where we nake some pretty damn good music IMO and we all get along for the most part all the time and have a great time doing what we do. Hell, Im grateful. I remember when I wasnt in a band for a long time, I really missed it.

Any sort of band member bashing is based on insecurity. You never see a dude who is confident in what he does for the band bashing on another member of their band...

I'm in a power metal band. I have 2 shredding, over the top guitar players and a keyboard player who was born to make music to a point that it pisses me off, and I love all of them like brothers. One of them I've been playing with for 7 years. He's my best friend, we've been able to write music together that neither of us have ever experienced anything like with other bands. Over the past 7 years I've wanted to strangle him more times than I can count, which is probably right about the same number of times he's wanted to strangle me.

When I read someone talk about a "guitard" on this forum, I feel sorry for them for not having the relationship that I do with the rest of their band. The only people I've ever had in my band that I've ever made derogatory remarks about similar to "guitard" are people that we ended up replacing because they couldn't keep up with what we expected.

If you don't respect your fellow musicians, how do you expect your music to work? Don't play music you don't love, don't play with musicians you don't respect. And don't suck...
