Who Actually LIKES Their Guitarists?

My guitarist is awesome. He started out as a bass player and now writes a lot of our material. He and his brother are both guitarists and both play in my band. The nice thing about them is that they really have an understanding of the place of the bass in the mix and musically.

Although I can understand peoples frustration with guitarists who play too loudly, constantly solo or have no concept of timing/music/volume. I guess I just dont have that problem right now.

We recently asked a guitarist from school to try out in our band (drums, bass, keys and vocals). He can say some douchey things every so often and he's a bit strange, but we know he's a great musician and he's a nice guy if you get to know him a little bit.

I liked our guitarist. He had a good sense of rhythm and was always able to get his parts down. He had great tone with his Les Paul and Fender amp. Then he decided to join a KISS tribute. We are currently on our third guitarist with...ahem...questionable ability.

I've known my guitarist since High School (we're both creeping up on 40). Great guy, great songwriter, a little controlling when it comes to other people's parts/sounds, but he knows that about himself and has a great sense of humor about it.

Guitarist in my original band although i have gripes is worth praising some.
When he solos he dosent worry about playing every note on the neck or playing as many notes as fast as he can.
He plays them to what the song needs and thats a welcome change.
And also in the creative process he is so easy to play with, no ego or being bossy.

i like most of the guitarists i have jammed with. but when they do something stupid, i have no problem calling them a "guitard."

it wouldnt bother me if they had a cute little nick name for me. heck i an even think of a good one but swearing isnt allowed on tb.

I've been playing in the same band, with the same lineup for over 10 years now. They are my best friends and like brothers to me (the drummer IS my brother). ....decent guitar players too.

In my book, the friendship always takes precedence of the music. If you can't stand the guys you work with, it isn't worth it - no matter how good the band may be. I'll take having a blast with my best buds writing mediocre music over sleepless nights of dealing with jerks just to play some good tunes ANY day!

As a guy originally playing as a guitarist before adding bass to my arsenal, I can say that I felt very few guitarosts cared very much about their own individual style. I really think guitarists are having an identity crisis as they feel great pressure to become minions of their favorite guitarists. Whether it be that they play in cover bands, trying to play perfectly and throwing tantrums when it is not, or being the guy that has an entirely Kirk Hammett liscensed rig, very few guitarists in high school seem to care at all about embracing their individuality.

And then there is me.

Anyone else know of any fingerstyle, drone stringing, shoegaze guitarists?

While I was still playing, I liked both my guitarist and drummer; such great musicians and equally great friends. For the most part, we were a 3-piece band and I had a lot of free reign.

Last year, I tried meeting some local musicians but nothing clicked. I found that whenever I jammed with someone, I found myself always comparing new musicians to my old bandmates.

I have a guitar player that doesn't practice or write with us, and only shows up if he's not working (usually is) or actually feels like it.

...but he's awesome. Just awesome. He shows up dressed like the dude, straps on his SG, and fits right in on lead.

Why? because when he's home with his grass he listens to our songs and plays with them. He literally walks in knowing what he's going to play and it sounds perfect. In maybe two takes.

He also makes a Crate sound great.

When he shows up for gigs he rips.

I have liked every guitarist I've ever played with on a personal level, they were all great people. I have great respect for some of them musically, as many were tremendously talented. As far as a band situation, they were all difficult to work with for a variety of reasons, some more than others, and all had very unusual personalities.

Except one.

I liked every aspect of playing alongside Peter. Smart, personable, dedicated, talented, did his homework, phenomenal training and musical knowledge (theory), great showman, good equipment, and the same level of expectation that I have for the music, as well as the same expectations for commitment to a band. On a scale of 10, the guy is an 11 to be in a band with on virtually every level.

And, as of next week, I will be in a band with him again! :)
