Who are you?

Hi everybody!

My name is Jon Cauble, born in '86. Been playing bass since I was 13, but added the low B to my rep about five years later. Although I'm currently on my first build, I've been at woodworking for a few years. I started when I was about eight years old; nothing serious, learning to make clocks, benches, drawers, etc. from my grandfather. This wasn't a daily thing, or even a weekly thing, but the experience got the info into my brain before it lost some of its absorbency. :smug: A family friend is a fifth generation Italian master carpenter, so I ALWAYS have a resource to tap for solid advice.

After many years of not even picking up a scrap of lumber, I got back into it. Up until this first build, I've spent about 90% of my time on the lathe. It is addictive, no question. My goal is to eventually make a living (or a significant part of one) making instruments. It would be cool to also build loudspeakers for home theaters.

I'm also interested in aquaria, video games, philosophy of law, martial arts, home theater, very basic electronic engineering, psychoacoustics, and physiology.

Hey guys, I'm Greg Johnsen (obvious enough), I'm 20, currently going to school on Long Island but will be transferring back to NC for my remaining semesters (NY is just too much fun).

I've built one bass, although the playability of it was a huge factor it really taught me how much I love woodworking and it introduced me to what I would like to be doing the rest of my life.

So as of now, I am working on a business plan to start my own bass retail store (I want to open it either in Chicago or NYC) that will carry mid range to high end basses and amps. I will also be building basses as a part time job, for myself at first but hopefully onto new customers well when I feel ready for it, but the dream is to sell them in my shop alongside Ritters, pedullas, laklands, and hopefully the beautiful works of art I've seen on this forum.

I've been playing for 6 years now (makes me feel old saying that, wow) and I never plan on stopping.

For those of you who run your own businesses I would love to have a conversation with you sometime and ask a few questions as well as take any advice that anyone has to offer.

Greg

Hi, my name is matthew i'm 13 and im building my first bass(5 string) with my dad. I have already bought my wood which is two peices of quilted maple and i already got my pickup: EMG MM5CS. We will be working on it with my uncles at his shop who is an expierienced wood worker and has all the tools but doesn't know much about building guitars. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for design or hardware like the bridge. I like the look of some ibanez basses like the SRT805DX and also spector basses and i slap alot so i like the sound of the music man sting ray aswell. reply if you have any suggestions or recommendations.:hmm:

Hello everyone, my name is Steve Grayson and I am reluctent to call my self a luthier but more of a maker of expensive sawdust. By day I work for Boeing as an electrician on the 787 program. I have been working with wood for almost all of my life and in the 80's I got a degree in Marine Carpentry but scraping barnicals was not really my thing. To date I have finished or started 2 Telecasters, a P bass, 2 Ric 4001-3 Hybrids made from a tracing a guy sent me. and in the que are 3 Thunderbirds for some guys at work who want to try making their own ( I bought the template from Ebay, I have always wanted to try GBTemplates) a Korina Flying Vee and I just aquired a 14" wide slab of African Mahog. to make a SG and an EB0 since they are just about the same body dimensions. Anyhow like I said I do not consider myself a Luthier at all so if I ask some stupid questions try not to rail me LOL
Thanks for reading
Steve

I do all my building in the school workshop

I mainly do acoustic instruments, guitars, mandolins and bouzoukis, but I have build a number of electrics too.

basses?

my forst was a fretless electric

since that disaster I've built 2 4 string electrics, one fanned fret 5, one ABG 4, and I'm currently working on a fretless 5.

it is my 73rd build

Hi my name is Jake and I'm looking to build my first bass. I'd count myself lucky as I have all the professional luthier tools at my disposal because my family are in the business of making guitars/basses for a living. The only problem with this is that the equipment is always in use and they're very busy so as of yet my dream of owning a bass I have built myself is just a dream. :(

Hi Guys
I'm Nathan, owner/operator of NB Custom Guitar Works in Mt. Brydges Ontario, Canada. I have no kids, and no life outside of building guitars and basses for the last 14 years, and I currently also run a recording studio and I am a front man and singer/songwriter in my band Quantum Electro Dynamics ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]).

All I can say is I love what I do, I do the majority with really old hand tools, rather than power tools, as my work I consider more an art as I am an artist and carver and have learned to appreciate the art in all I do. Art and music are my life. I opened my business to be able to deliver the most custom built "to fit" instruments possible. Whether it be to fit the style of player, body shape and size of the musician for specific purposes and sounds, or all in the name of extravagant unique art, I LOVE it! I have been playing my personally hand made custom as my preferred lead guitar for 3 years now and will never give it up! It may not be a bass, but I love writing kick ass bass lines, and my guitar has almost as much beef as my bass players Fender P-bass! Check some of that stuff out @ Bahamutishiki's Channel - YouTube

Peace guys!

Nathan

Bass/Guitar building is only a hobby right now. Four builds in my skills (and tools) are slowly getting better with each instrument.

I've been playing bass since 1964 so I've got a few years under my belt (and some extra lbs).
To say I'm a luthier is untrue. I built quite a few bass bodies to my liking (wish I had photos but they were destroyed in a flood about 2 years ago), two for friends and 3 for me that I eventually completed into working instruments.
The reason I say I'm not a luthier is that I feel when you purchase a neck instead of building one then you're not quite the craftsman that deserves that title.

Anyway, this is a great site and who knows I may step out on a limb and do a complete build.

Thanks,
Pep

38yo, Married, 3 kids.
Sydney, Australia.
Been playing bass (upright and electric) for more than 20yrs now. Did a degree about 10 years back on upright. Worked fulltime as a muso/music teacher before going to bible college. Now I'm a church pastor and planting a church in a new housing estate in Sydney's western suburbs. Been playing with tools for a long time, always did setups and basic soldering/adjustments. However, the idea of building something scared me and I thought it would be too hard. Which is bizarre considering I've built a kit car and various other things over the years. I have a mate and he has been building guitars for a few years. I watched him and last year decided to have a go because the new 6 string fretless I wanted I couldn't buy or afford to have custom made for me. He said, "it's about time". So I started 2x4 strings as testbed prototypes for the 6 string. This is how far I am with one of them...

The other needs a lot of work. Then late last year my 3yo started bugging me so I built him a Stingray 2 string for Christmas. It was a great learning experience and my first finished bass...

I've just started a fender bass VI style instrument for my S.I.L. So I'm a newbie, but I'm having a go... and I think I'm seriously hooked. :D
