Who else prefers a P-neck to a J-neck?

If a J is thick to you, what kind of basses have a thin enough profile for you?

I'll tell you that when I get one. It's not as if I have a bass with a pencil for a neck, but even the J neck has a bit of meat on it in my opinion. Sometimes I wish I could have something smaller, and sometimes I WANT a six string P bass neck.

I prefer the P necks as well. When I first started, I could play faster on the J's and sometimes, when I was having problems with a particular song, I would switch to the J until I figured it out and then switch back. Now I almost exclusively use the P's.
I'd like to know where all the P necks that people pull to swap to J necks are hiding.

I prefer a P neck. Specifically my Squier II P-bass. I have big palms but kind of small fingers. Some of you guys know how that is. but I've been playing the Geddy Jazz at my friends house and i think im in love.

I am a short guy with little hands and I've always preferred the P neck over the J. I like the bigger open position especially. I recently discovered J pups though after years of only P's. I am also thinking a straight P with J pups would be very nice. I have a few P/Js, but something about J's lately get me excited. Just more range. I think the P gets downplayed for the J in general and I always preferred the P. It seems growlier and the J is gruntier.

I started out on a 1.75" P-neck. Always felt the 1.50" Jazz neck to be too small. Now I play a 1.65" Spector and have learned to prefer it. I'm now considering a jump over a Fender Jazz to a Sadowsky Will Lee next: 1.45".

Preferences aside, it's just a matter of getting used to it.

well I have to eat my words: I hurt my left hand and suddenly I am having trouble playing with the P neck width, sold it and in the process of getting a Warmoth J neck.

I think it's completely a matter of preference. I was a j-neck guy for years, but after a decade on upright, realized that P-width was more comfortable to me, just because it was less adjustment. I like the Sting Ray neck even better, but for the same reason.

If I didn't go back and forth between the two, I could reacquire love for the j-neck pretty quickly.

I like a P neck. I also don't think it's a body-size issue either... i'm a smallish dude (5'8") and i'm VERY uncomfortable on a J neck.

However, i like the wideness of the P neck, i do preffer a neck that's a bit shallower, like my ATK.

In general though, for me P neck > J neck.

I've got relatively small hands, but I love a thicker P bass neck. My 76' Ric is very similar to my 78' P and I love them both.

When I play a jazz I just feel not at home, can't really explain it.

Definitely prefer the P, although I didn't start out thinking that way. My first bass was a Squier Affinity P and I never liked the neck, I had to raise the action a fair bit to keep it from buzzing, etc. So when I got my chance to buy my first new bass I got a 2008 USA Jazz. It's a really nice instrument, but I never wanted to take it out on stage and bought a used MIM Jazz neck for the Squier. Fast forward to when I bought my MIM Precision. At first I was gonna do a neck swap, but instead spent the money on a tort. guard, CTS pots and a new p-up. After playing it for a few weeks I realized how much more comfortable it felt. I have fairly short fingers so you'd think the Jazz would have been the better fit, but it wasn't. Also, I've had issues with tendonitis and found that when I left the other two in their cases and just played the P, it got considerably better. Anyway, I just recently purchased a USA Std. P(Oly white w/ maple) and have absolutely fell in love! Now the 2008 Jazz is for sale and deserves to go to somebody who will play it because I don't anymore.

My guess is because of the myth that slim neck = speedy playing. I don't know about you guys, but after a little practice, I'm pretty confident in my "speed" on a P neck, and I don't have especially long fingers or hands..

As for P necks, I love 'em. The only Jazz I've owned was a Squier Affinity Jazz V, i.e. not a good representation of a "Jazz" neck (since it's a five-string.) Whenever I play a four-string Jazz, my left hand hates the neck. I'm just used to a P. Not complaining

I don't really get it. I feel like if you have proper technique and aren't baseball gripping the thing than it shouldn't matter if you have big hands.. Lots of people with big hands play a guitar neck and it is way smaller than a jazz.

I'm not really a guitar expert but -- are there really guitars with a neck that's smaller than a Jazz neck, especially near the nut? My band's singer has a Strat with a somewhat chunky neck that I love the feel of and my Les Paul copy's neck isn't that thin, either.

I too prefer P necks, by the way, they simply feel better to me.

You all do know that Fender has narrowed the P-bass neck this year... Right? It's no longer 1.75" - it's the same width as a Lakland - 1.625 (or thereabouts).

So this question gets a bit more complex: Do you prefer the *old* P-bass necks or the *new*, narrower (but not so narrow as a Jazz bass) neck?

I actually quite like the new necks - I find the old P to be too wide, but the J neck to be just a bit tight for slappage...

I'm wanting to put a P neck on my Jazz bass. I've gotten used to bigger necks and actually prefer them for the band setting i'm in.
