Who finds black basses boring?

I much prefer looking at my walnut jazz, my sonic blue p-bass and my surf green jazz, but I love playing my black j-bass more than the rest.

I'm going to black out my fretless j build except strings. I already have strings and they're stainless. Maybe tapewounds come later.
Something handsome about black 1-ply & black controls, black bridge on a noooot-blaaaack body. Ill put up pics when it's done. Not ready yet.

My issue is with the fingerprints. On a black gloss finish they show up something shocking and make you look like a grot.

I could do some sort of back plates, but don't know what or where. I'd like gold hardware, but the frets are nickel so I'd like to just keep it chrome.

I've been thinking of doing some sort of pinstriping, or stickers made to a specific design, like spider-webs or something.

I would also go with gold; knobs, tuners, bridge, and pickups (if you can). Personally, I don't worry about frets.

I would agree with GIBrat51 - very few guitars with gold hardware actually have gold fretwire! The Les Paul Custom Black Beauty, for example, doesn't have them; neither did my old limited edition Stratocaster (white, with gold hardware... beautiful! I should never, ever have sold it!), or my father's Gretsches. Most guitars with gold hardware have ordinary nickel or steel frets. It is probably the look which you are used to, if you like the appearance of guitars with gold hardware, so I wouldn't hesitate to fit gold hardware to it if you want to!

However, you can get brass fretwire if you really want to complete the look. A refret wouldn't be enormously expensive, and you could always wait until it really needs a refret before you do this.

I wouldn't mind a full stealth black bass as long as it had these features...
All flat black finish on the body, neck and headstock
Unlined frettless ebony fingerboard
All black hardware
All black (no exposed poles) PJ pickups
Black tape wound strings
No visible logo on the headstock
Fenderbird body shape with reverse headstock
Black pick guard

If something like that existed I don't think it would be boring. But regular black gloss body, maple neck basses, yep boring.

I don't mind black basses but my Black Ibanez does not see near as much playing time as my Dragonburst Carvin..

Probably a lot more to it than just the color though.

Yes, the first real bass I played (gigged) was a Yamaha Motion B, all black, ebony FB, black HW, without the cheesy 80's graphic logo on the front. Not only was it boring, it was HARD to keep clean.

On the plus side, it was hard to recognize and on our first gig we opened for a known local band through their equipment. Their bass player had a Rick 4001 through a SVT stack. Afterward, when he was complimenting me on my tone and playing, he asked me what bass I was playing.

Yes. I own three of them. I constantly wish they were other colors.

My my my, how things change......I now have this as my go to rock 'n' roll bass

and I am looking to trade this sunburst body for a black one.......go figure

Never liked the look of a black bass with a white pickguard. Looks generic to me, but I like black basses with black or Tort pickguards.

I have never liked black basses. I own 21 basses and only one is black and not real black it's really the fender Japan dark charcoal grey sparkle that was called (I think) Montego black or something like that. It's also one of my go to basses. I bought it because I wanted this particular bass.

The closest thing to black I have is a sunburst Epiphone Les Paul Express 22" guitar that I converted into a bass, and I'm set to receive a Rick 325 Chinese knockoff 21" guitar that I'm also going to convert to a bass that's black, but I'm having it painted blue by Pat Wilkins (below is my colorized version of the photo I got from the seller), so it looks like I'm not partial to all black either.
