Who finds black basses boring?

My black bass is too black. It's an '87 Jazz Bass Special. Black headstock, black tuners, black body, black bridge, black knobs, black pickups, and rosewood board. I swear, you almost can't see it. I never can wear a black shirt with it. Plays great, though, and I use it all the time. Thought about changing all the hardware and putting a pickguard on it just so it'll have something showing. But, I also hate to change it at all, ya know?

BTW, to BrandonBass. Before I picked up a Valenti, I was utterly sold on my old Lakland JO5 being "the one". Got that one for a steal right from Dan off the rack in ChiTown as it wasn't the best piece of wood to go natural on. Had scars like my face so I dug it immediately though. I'm sure he didnt want to send it to a dealer, so it was a win-win.

Long story short, once I had decided on a color ( a 1996 Honda BLACK currant pearl ), had Pat Wilkins shoot it for me. Mint job. Now I have a bass whose color I totally dig, and it sings! BTW, the Valenti I love too, its thump and its 34" scale. She is dinged and scarred BLACK ( no , it wasnt relic'd, just abused in its short life) w/pau ferro (black n maple is a natual combination imho) and I dig it fine just the way it is.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have never been "bling" minded. So my "function over form" sense of astheitcs may be at play here. to Wit, actually sold a Valenti which played well as it was much too pretty with its birdseye board and LPB bod. All it took was one chic to say " nice wood", not "nice groove" and out the door it went. Freak out. :bassist:

So I would take your 'Ray, slightly vintagey and all, and make it yours permanently by having it shot in the color of your choice.

To Russel, I dig what you're sayin'. Built a 67 Chevelle, original red paint. Really dont dig red so I broke it up with black stripes. sometimes a detail or two makes a world of difference. Choose a nice complimentary color pickguard and offset the all black.

I'm the type of person who could care less about the color of a bass and more about tone and feel. However, I love the look of black Fenders with maple boards and white pickguards and any bass with the red, maple board and white pickguard scheme. I do prefer the feel of rosewood but I think maple looks so much better and cannot tell a difference in the sound. One day I will own a red, white pickguard, maple neck bass or guitar for looks alone.

I prefer the natural color of wood but I have an Iron pewter Ibby EDB605 for church that fits in great with the black piano, amps/cabs, and electronics drums. I even strung it with DR Black Beauties for full effect. Since I rewired it to work off a wallwart, I added a bright white LED to the front so I would know when the power was on. A few members complained about the light so I covered it with a small piece of black electrical tape, LOL.

For looks, I do prefer the natural walnut look of my BTB675. The EDB605 is very comfortable to play because the body is curved to hug around the hip making it easier on the plucking arm to take a more natural position.
