Who finds black basses boring?

I have one, and I can't wait for the day I can get it repainted some bodacious color but still keep the pickguard.*

I have considered refinishing one of my black basses. This 89 stingray, black w rosewood bored and tort pg. My favourite of the bunch, in fact. Only thing stopping me from doing so is that its 'semi-vintage' and I really like the battle scars on the body.

Sometimes I wonder if it a case of the grass being on the otherside. I remember that in not too distant past, my favourite color was black w rosewood and I used to think that seafoam green looks cheesy. But now I find myself creaming over fiesta red basses w maple boards.

Its always a shame the best sounding basses Ive played are not always the most handsome ones.

Anyways, I know that color should be the last thing I take into considering when picking a bass... but it doesnt hurt if you feel that ur bass looks like the sex right?

I came up playing a cheap copy of a P, and it was all white. I saved and saved, after deciding on a bass. I put my money into the electronics - options such as they were. Hooray. But that meant no fancy top woods. NO PROBLEM! Why? Because I had spent years dreaming of owning a bass with chrome hardware that looked like what I got. :D

You need to (and trust me on this one) talk to her about it. If you sand it down before you talk to her, she'll feel like she failed (and again, trust me: you don't want this.)

Sit her down and talk to her about how you feel about the color. Remember: when she picked it out, she was thinking of you. Tell her that you're thinking about changing the color and you wanted to know how she felt about it. Your reasoning shouldn't matter.

I know I'm getting a little off-topic, but COMMUNICATION is the key to every successful relationship.

Thanks Hulk, I actually picked out the bass. I chose it on my own, and then in a not-so-discreet way told her where I played it and what it looked like. I have definitely thought of sanding down the finish, but I'd only do that if the wood underneath was nice, so that I could leave it natural or stain it. I don't think I'd want to paint it another colour. I actually like how it looks some days, just feel that it needs something else. I would certainly discuss any of this with her before doing anything to it, but I think I may just add something to it to liven it up a bit, without changing the actual finish.

But thanks, any tips to be a better partner that don't come from her after I screw up are always appreciated. ;)

I'd like to see what some people have down to their black basses, with rosewood boards, that do not have pickguards to spruce them up.

Some tribal stickers, pinstripes, or even a custom pickguard are things I'm considering. May have to open Photoshop and try some things out.

Depends on the bass, and the pickguard, i like the black, black guard, maple neck fender design, but i think that a black P bass with white guard is the most boring look there is. But i like some other basses in black, black ricks, and black Rays depending on the guard

Black is boring... but I hate red....

My MTD was red when I bought it. I was trading gear in towards a bass, it played and sounded great, but I hated that it was trans cherry red, I absolutely hated the color, but it played and sounded really good.
Months later I make an attempt to remove the heavy poly/plasticy coating and trans cherry red to find out the figured maple top is a 1mm think veneer with a 1mm thick black papery backing to mask the mahogony grain from the body. What a huge pain in the rear. It took over a month to get the finish off to the point I could stain it.
There was so much glue from the backing and veneer soaked into the body's top it was impossible to get a consistant finish on it.
I was thinking a walnut stain would look good, but ended up with an ebony to get it dark enought to resemble walnut.
The palsticy clear coat is gone, the brandname on the headstock, and the dreadfull cherry red.
I refinished the wood coverred pu's to match the spotchy-artistic frontal body finish. Looks like a bass made from old barnboards now but i love it, I swear removing the thick rock hard ployurathane plasticy overfinish has made this bass sound better, like removing a blanket from an amp. Sure it might look a lil ugly/artisic, but it plays like butter and sounds phenominal to me. Can't wait to save up some cash to buy some nordy soapbars and preamp.

Black is boring, Red is dead, don't be afriad to make your favorite bass your own creation. I love my bass even more now.

Looks great to me! It has a very distinctive look to it. I bet there are not many MTDs like yours either.
