Who has a P, J AND a P/J?

I have 6 P's and 1 Jazz and One 5 string. The Jazz seldome sees the light of day.

Yeah I go through "off" periods with the jazz too but then i start listening to Zep, Eagles and Ronstadt, etc and then I play the jazz every day for months..

The key with the PJ is to find one where the P and J are fairly matched in output so the J can stand on its own. This way you can quickly switch to it if you want a different sound. I don't find that P and J pickups mix that well, but TBH i'm not a fan of mixing pickups in general. I like to go 100 percent neck or bridge.

PJ basses with P and J pickups that actually match output that I've tried: Yamaha BB424x/1024x/2024x. Fender Tony Franklin PJ set.

Also apparently Fralin will give you a PJ set with an overwound J that will match in output.

I have a bass with the EMG GZR pj set, and they do not match in output. I'm still glad to have it though. I use the J practicing by myself with backing tracks when I want a sound that cuts more and is more articulate. If the mostly make believe (IMO) idea of the P not sounding like a "true P" in the presence of the J pickup bugs you, get a PJ on a 3 way switch. The Godin Shifter, Yamaha BBs mentioned above, Fender Tony Franklin, Michael Anthony Schecter and Yamaha signature basses, to name a few, all have this.

Well, the purps is still the same as birth. But yeah, I did re finish the talman. Ha, a few times: ) Im gonna keep it like this. I dig it. But, I am going to get a 70s block neck for the purple one. But, no rush.

I have a couple of P's, numerous J's, and 4 P/J's. Of the 4 one is a Warmoth P body w/a J neck loaded with Aguilar pickups. As mentioned, often the J pickup is poorly balanced output wise with the P. Aguilar did a great job making the J a humbucker and getting the outputs even. Running passive - An excellent set. It's not comparable to either a P or J directly because the pickups are voiced slightly different. I use it as is and it rocks. If I want a "pure" P or J tone I grab one of those.

Which Aguilar P/J set are you using?

I've been considering the Aguilar AG 4P/J-HC 4-string P/J Pickup Set over the EMG GZR P/J set as a replacement on a 2015 FSR Squier Jaguar since I already have a bass with an EMG GZR split P pup in it.

What model is the 'purps'?
I don't recall that color/finish as an original offering, but then again it gets tougher and tougher to keep track of these things.

My P/J is a Squier VM Jaguar. It came with a bass boost preamp and passive pickups that were underwhelming. I also have an Ibanez 500FL lined fretless with P/J pickups and an active preamp, which sounds very good to me.

The Jaguar's bass boost preamp developed problems, so I bypassed it and ran passive for awhile. Didn't care for the sound from either pickup, or any combination. The neck, though, is just about perfect for me, and the body shape is ergonomically suited to me - and I have a thang for Fender offset bodies. So after a lot of online research, I decided to try an Audere 4-band Jazz plate preamp, wired to the pre-existing battery box.

What a difference! The pickups that sounded lifeless and dull before came alive with the preamp. I believe that Audere's design, which fully separates each pickup's signal before mixing and sending to the EQ section, allows each pickup to deliver that pickup's unique sound, both in type and from its body placement. The Audere truly transformed this bass from a pretty looking instrument into my go-to main player.

I have 1 P, too many J's, if there is such a thing and a Nash PJ with Lollars. As is always said it does its own thing.

The bridge pickup brightens up the tone a bit and give me a little something different. Plus it is a very sweet playing bass.

Yep – same bass. Actually, according to the cardboard container mine shipped in when I purchased it new, I'm pretty sure it was called "transparent purple." But as you know, there really ain't much purple happening there. I also owned the passive 5-string version in matte silver. Great basses – extremely comfortable and lightweight. However, I eventually liberated both of them in order to buy a Yamaha BB415 – my sole P/J – which I still gig regularly.

It have a couple Highway Ones, that I upgraded ( Hipshot Tuners & Pure Vintage 63 pickups ) a couple of Jazz basses, one is a Highway One, ( replaced the tuners, with Hipshots, and installed the Vintage 60's pickups ), and a G&L JB, also have a Geddy Lee Jazz ( made in Mexico) I also the have a American Deluxe Precision ( in black, with gold pickguard, rosewood neck, had to replace the pickups ( P-46 ), soon after I aquired the bass, as it just quit, also replaced the onboard preamp with a Audure classic preamp ), it's a nice sounding bass, also aquired a used Elite Precision, nice neck, but the sound is too polite, gonna fiddle with the split pickup, and install a Pure Vintage 63, and see what it does, so what have I been using of late, a straight Precision, why I have so many, it's too much of a pain to sell, and since I'm a collector, why sell

Somebody earlier mentioned the Aguilar set, is it 64's?. I can testify, they were made for PJ as far as I can tell and the J pickup is truly muscular, making a blend knob very useful indeed!

I have all three. More than a couple. P/Js are pretty handy if you have a classic rock gig and need to go back and forth between a J and P tone. The latter nails it with the P soloed. The former is close enough for me with the blend even.

But now that I have read your OP, I am beginning to wonder if a P/J with Bartolini pickups would be considered a PBJ...
