Who has a P, J AND a P/J?

I have varieties of P/J/PJ but this week I'm down for driving my Aerodyne PJ since we're pulling five straight this week and I'm doing what I can to stay light and lean in all this heat. #4 tonight in Port O'Connor TX, Hurricane Junction

I have a Fender Custom Shop Jazz, a P bass with. MIJ Jazz neck on it, a Spector NS2 (p/J) and a Sandberg P/MM. I also have 2 Stingrays and a Ric. Yes I'm a junkie and clearly need an intervention

A PJ is never going to be the best of both worlds. It's essentially a P Bass Plus. It'll never sound like a true jazz bass due to the lack of the two single coil pickups. Now whether it sounds like a P bass if you turn down the jazz pickup completely is debatable

I skiped to the end to comment but will go back and read, so excuse me if this suggestion has already been made:
I favor the P-Bass vibe and tone but if forced to make a choice I'd go with a P/J... Volume Tone & selector switch.
If you install a switch that takes the J pickup (or whatever you have there) out of the circuit you have a P and I recommend this setup over a Volume Volume Tone. There is a muscular, focused and immediate nature to the PJ tone that I adore and a great P-Bass tone is one of the sweetest things in life; it can be soulful, romantic, down low and hitting all the right spots. It can be brutal, visceral and cut through the mix.
But in the right hands it always supports and glues the music.
It does the job and builds from there.
You'll lose that with a VVT IMO

Fender American Professional P
Fender 70's style P
EBMM Caprice

I like having the three styles. The P/PJ styles have really grown on me and might be my favorite types of basses now.

I have a P and J and have thought about adding a P/J but havent pulled the trigger yet. Since I have one of each would the P/J be a bit overkill? I know thats a crazy TB question but I dont have anymore room for another bass. I am not in the train of thought either that getting a P/J eliminates the P and J and is the best of both worlds. I tried out a few P/Js in stores and actually preferred the sound of my P and J individually..Maybe I am just a purist...Anyone else?

I now own a J and several P/J's and played regular P for years, (all Fenders) a good P/J is like having a good P bass with an extra pickup for added mids, treble etc. I don't know if I'll ever buy just a plain P again. The P/J does everything a P does plus, people say that the pickups interact, if they do it's so slight you won't really notice it and if it does bother you, you can have a three way switch put in like on a TF fretless. I have one and had another volume control put in so it's now VVT with a three way switch, best of both worlds.

I think I've got most of the Fender tonal spectrum covered. I currently have a Precision, a Jazz, an Elite Precision (P/J), a Reggie Hamilton Jazz (P/J) and a Roscoe Beck. I had a couple of P/Reverse-P's (which is actually my favorite configuration) that I sold and am looking to replace.

More importantly, I love having a subtle J Bass pickup in the bridge. It still mostly sounds like a P bass, it just does something to the midrange that makes pedals sound better and is easier for me to EQ. Ymmv

My PJ's absolutely can not do the full on jazz thing though.

To me the J bridge pickup on a P bass is like a presence control, subtly adds more mids and top end.

Have all three, the only time I used a pj exclusively is when I got lazy (it did the job fir sure) recently got bored took it apart rewired and upgraded electronics added a black pickguard a Fender licenced ebonol mighty-mite neck (perfect fit!) and painted the headstock.
Now it is back in the mix and feels great and the best of all three worlds...

I have a P4, a Jazz 5, a PJ4, and a PJ5. The PJs have 3 way switching, with separate Volumes. To my tired old ears, on P only, they sound like Ps. The J part on both PJs are split coils; a Super 55 on the 4 and a Nordstrand on the 5. Soloed, they sound Jazz "Bassish", but not all the way there. The Jazz Bass sound is not among my most utilized at any rate, and I rarely run the pickups combined. All my basses use flats, except the Jazz 5; rounds with Fralin singles.

My #1 alternates between the PJ5 and the oddball in the group.
