This. If it happens organically its fine. But to spend time thinking about it is a little nerdy maybe?
The electric bass is Belle, as in Bluebelle. It makes sense to a Dogwitch fan.
The EUB, acquired later, is Donna. Yes, as in Belladonna, because it just kinda flowed.
I know, I know, I need to get out more. And practice more. Mostly practice, I think.
OTOH, I've never felt inspired to name any of my guitars; go figure.

Bass in Avatar is "The Red Rooster" aka "El Gallo Rojo" .... 3rd generation
My 1940 Juzek is "Phat Gurl" , I've called all of my uprights that name
for past basses:
Fredrico- the fearless Fender Bass --- my first 1976 P-bass I got after meeting Fred Hammond at church
Smitty --- several Ken Smith
Chuck---- CR5 Smith
Black Mamba --- Black Fender Jazz
Blondie-- Trans white Mike Kinal
Sunny--Sunburst jazz
Silver Surfer-- Silver jazz
Dr.Pepper--- Fodera Emperor Deluxe 5 with red burst finish
Chestnut --- Fodera Imperial 5 with a horse chestnut top
Toothless --- Fbass BNF5 fretless
Come to think of it alot of the cars,dogs and friends have nicknames too.

Sometimes I name them, but it has to come naturally...can't try and name them. Out of the 11 basses I've owned I have named 3. It is a little silly...but what's wrong with that?
my basses tend to be named by their top wood / origin.
a friend of mine drove from NY to boston to pick up a bass, i ended up getting the bass off of him. it's "the boston bass."
my other bass is an ambonya burl top. "the amboyna bass." easy enough.

my uprights have been named "bertha" and "gertrude". i can't think of more appropriate names
i have a geddy lee jazz and a marcus miller jazz. i just call them "marcus" and "geddy" but i suppose those are more like model names than nicknames

My 5 year old son just named all my bases... I was used to call them by color, but now they all have names...

I've never named my basses or my guitars--just called them what they were-my guitar, my Bass.
Or by type-my electric, my 12 string
Or by brand or model name.
Until recently, "My bass" was my EB-3 copy.
Now it could also be my SR500F, so I call it either my bass or my fretless--depending on the context and need (Or lack of need) to distinguish my basses.
Or I sometimes call it my SR500F.
So they all have names--but generic names to describe what the are or their function. Or brand or model names.
The closest I came to an individual name was the money for one of the pickups I put in a guitar came from my grandmother, and I did consider naming the guitar I was going to build after her.
But when I didn't do that build the pickup sat around for a few years before going in a different guitar I later bought, that idea kind of fell by the wayside.
