I'm rocking this MarkBass JB Players School combo. Two weeks ago I jammed with a rockband. They were so loud I regretted not having earplugs. (Don't worry, I bought them since.) But the combo amp didn't even have to work hard.

I’ve used my SW115 by itself a number of times and it’s never disappointed. My wife plays too. Her band did an outdoor Christmas gig with no FOH support for bass and just the 115. I could still hear her clear as a bell 100 yards away. Pull the trigger.

Reduced power out should help reduce the boom, and you will run at a higher output voltage (for a given volume) and get into the controlled breakup design of the class D section. Explained much better by the @agedhorse here: Ran my Streamliner at 16 ohms tonight -- a revelation

I figured it was something like that, but wanted to ask... I'm typically satisfied with the bit of tube warmth I get from the preamp of the Streamliner, and there have been times I've gotten into it's limiter that produced the effect you're talking about even with both cabs(it was loud, lol)... If I wanted to get there at a lower volume, I'd probably just use one cab - rather than make up a series cable for my cabs...

Regarding controlling low end boom - it hasn't been an issue since I got my Broughton HPF + LPF, although I still feel the D800 works better with a pair of the SW115s... I'm blessed to have *a few* options regarding amps - if I really want to "get tubey" with a Mesa flavor, there's this:

My last single 15" cab would be 1978. ... I realized 12" respond quickly, 15" lag and that's when I stopped using them. ... It's the cab and not the speaker that produces bass response. ...

The Subway 115 is great, I’ve used it a ton with multiple Mesa (D800 and plus) and GK (RB400IV and Fusion 500) amps, playing from classic rock to modern heavy stuff, and it always delivers. Probably ordering the new 215.

15's don't sound any more massive than 10's. Speaker size is irrelevant in that regard, just look at what Phil Jones has done with 5" drivers that can crack building foundations...

My main amp for the last 5 years at church has been a 100 watt Fender with 1 -15". Does the job just fine. My main amp everywhere else has been an Ampeg B100R, 100 watts with 1-15". The Ampeg has worked great playing everything from small, nearly acoustic gigs to outdoor concerts in front of 5,000 people (with FOH support, of course). Sounds warm and punchy with various electric basses and my upright with Krivo pickup. Not for sale at any price!
