My bass teacher at Berklee:
My favourite slap player is the one who uses finger style!
...I'll see myself out.
Larry Graham. The O.G. of slap.
Tony Vitti is your favorite slap player?!?!
I'm sure Tony would be the first to encourage you to get out more, expand your horizons, and listen to a ton of other bassists
...not because Tony isn't an excellent slap player (or an excellent bassist all around) but because he is a genuinely humble musician who understands where journeymen fit in the world compared to the pantheon of truly brilliant innovators.
Larry Graham, Louis Johnson got me then.... and Alain does now
If I had to choose just one? Probably Mark King.
Marcus Miller, every note is a diamond.
Marcus Miller is a genius level musician, period. I have been listening to Marcus Miller maybe 45 years, and I have never heard him play a bad note.
I love his Sire demos. He is the real deal.
...I think I have a couple of his books. Back when you hadda use a phone to place the order. Gotta love a guy that answers his own phone.
Another vote for Marcus on so many levels. Doug Johns is no slouch either.
How has nobody said Victor Wooten yet?
Aleksandr Nikolayev (RIP), on "Dusya-Agregat"
Tony Levin, though I like him (them both, actually) for his other techniques, too.
Marcus Miller all the way.
Not to be confused with the "Who is your favorite player to slap?" thread
Mark King, Brian Bromberg.
The mighty Claypool!!
