Bromberg is a bad man!
Victor is another amazing player and great person too.
In no particular order:
But basically, I'm impressed by anyone who can do it reasonably well, because I can hardly do it at all.
I can't stand Instagram Slap, but this is slap to make a song and pay the bills.
If I had to hire someone, and I needed it tasteful, grooving and slappy it would be Marcus Miller. He's never gratuitous, never showy for showy's sake (except where a show or demo calls for it), and is the most musical slap player I've heard.
I'm not a fan of that kind of very mid-scooped tone... but I really liked what he was playing. A lot of slap players seem to treat groove as a secondary element, but this one was beautiful. That was your teacher? Nice!
There's quite a few good slappers out there nowadays but I think Stanley Clarke never quite gets the kudos he deserves. He was the inspiration for guys like Marcus Miller and School Days was a complete game changer.
I think for me it may welö be darryll Jones.
Fredie Washington comes to mind as well.
Reminds me of Michael Hedges.
Stanley Clarke surely inspired Marcus Miller. He told a funny story on Sirius Radio about learning a Stanley Clarke solo when he was 14, and then playing that solo whenever he had a solo section for the next year or so.
That said, when it came to groovy slapping, I bet Larry Graham was a bigger influence.
Thing is, 'slap players' also play fingerstyle, so it's kind of a rhetorical question.
Jonas hellborg is my favorite slapper. I don't care much for the machine like players, (enter your tube video here) I want musicality not chops, as it doesn't impress me unless its a rare combo of both.
Normally not a fan of slap but Brett Sisson of Painted Man here in Myrtle Beach tears it up.
They all sound about the same to me.
