Who makes a good telecaster style bass?

I remember seeing one boutique builder that made one with more tone controls than the real thing, and that peaked my interest, can anyone tell me what brand it was?
Also, is it able to achieve a similar tone to the real thing? I also hear that the pup in tele's causes hum, is there anything with the same sound minus the hum? I know it doesnt matter during a gig, but I'd like to get that tone for recording too.

I just picked up a new Schecter Model T, not boutique- but modeled after a Tele. Very versatile tone controls, and yes, hot HOT pickups that buzz a little when the highs are turned up.

It plays and sounds so sweet, I bought it and didn't notice a chip on the back of the headstock until I got it home. I don't even care. We love each other despite our flaws.

Don't write off the 51RI Fender - Totally love mine. I thought about putting a bridge pickup in it but the stock sound is exactly what I'm after so who needs tonal options :p. I found it used with a Seymour Duncan SCPB2 - VERY hot, bassy, phat... and no noisier than my standard P. My 4001 was much more of an issue in the studio.

* Oh and... Body contours are for PUSSIES!

do you mean current tele or old school single coil Precision tele?

Thanks for all the replies guys! Yeah, vin*tone---benevente was the one, but can it achieve that tone that I'm looking for with those J pickups (boken question mark) thanks a bunch!-----I just love the sound of the single coil fender style telecaster bass and even more so love the looks,-----but I don't want to drop 5000 on a custom shop fender that isn't very versatile, even though I'm sure those can get the same oldschool tone which I'm mainly after. LOVE the regenerate guitar works posted I'd like one with a pickup and bridge cover (like Dunn's bass on doin' our thing), but I would also like it to be a little bit more versatile *JUST* incase.

Search for a Schecter Baron Bass (they are discontinued, but a few occasionally pop up on Ebay). They made them in 4 string solid and semi hollow. I own a prototype 5 string Baron and the sound is great if you are looking for a mid to high end snappy punch. The lows are pretty lacking though. As for controls, it has a three band eq and the volume pot can be pulled for a built in 'Slap Contour (which sounds like it just cuts the mids and spikes the treble and bass.)'

Also:
I have heard alot of people saying to completely stay away from tele shaped basses due to neck dive, but I solved the problem by having a single strap lock on the bass horn for a bit more length, and a thick suede strap. Never neck dives now.
