Who played in Kenny G live?

Back to the original topic, I dig Vail's playing and I thought that him and the drummer made up a tight, kicka$$ rhythm section that I could learn a thing or two from despite my loathing of the soprano sax in general.

The figerstyle section of his solo on the live album is also something I'll gladly admit to stealing phrases from when jamming the good ole ii-V. It's tasteful and melodic.

Well you chose one sentence out of a long and carefully worded response - I think you have to see it all in context and not pick and choose ...:hmm:

Take what he said in its entirety, or none of it.

No surprise that you either forgot or completely ignored what I was adressing:

You: I was talking about what Pat Metheny actually said - he didn't say that anybody "sucked" - here's what he actually said :"

Me:Right, because "spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, ****ed up playing" is the farthest thing from saying he "sucked".

Hell, saying he sucked would've been so much kinder.

Metheny didn't say he "sucked", he said far worse. Do you disagree?
:hmm:

And it was hardly eloquent.

I'm curious. If KG is so bad etc. etc., how many of you would turn down the gig as his bassist if he called you?

Just as interesting would be to see how many of the haters here could even make the cut. I know I surely couldn't. For all the smack talk about how 'lame' G's music is, I'd bet my pedalboard that only a very small minority here could have passed Vail's audition.

Well as Jim says - the last part was just wrong - but did you actually read the quote I posted...

Yes I did. And sounds (to me) just the type of thing someone who is envious would say to tear down the competition. It may be nicely written, but the underlying meaning is the same.

Pat Metheny has written a long and eloquent explanation - I don't know how anybody can be in any doubt who has actually bothered to read all of that...?

Pat Metheny has no need to be jealous of anybody - as I said he has played sold-out gigs every night of the year for decades, dozens of successful albums and has got to play with as many of the Jazz "greats" as anybody could wish for - legends like Ornette Coleman , Jaco, Dave Holland, Chick Corea,Jim Hall ,John Scofield,Derek Bailey etc. etc.

It's really hard to say what makes a person envious or jealous. All I’m saying is its possible.
In fact if there is one person in Jazz that people would be jealous of, in terms of success - it would have to be Metheny!! :p

And you can bet your last dollar that there are a lot of people that are dead jealous of Pat Metheny too. I'm really talking in general terms about the way some people bad mouth Kenny G and other famous artists. That’s why some think I have no facts; well they are both right and wrong. I’m addressing basic human emotions. I have found that when I dig deeper, past all the pretty words, rationalizations and other b/s that people spew. The underlying cause of “most” (not all) peoples’ angst is they are jealous of the success those artists have. And just because they may be famous artist themselves does not make them immune to basic human emotions. Such as Jealousy and envy ect, ect. People have justified, rationalized, pasteurized and homogenized ways to make believe as if they are above those basic human feelings. They are not (me included). No matter how successful and famous they are, or how eloquent of an article they can write (or have written for them).

Vail Johnson is a great bassist, and from what I've heard he's not a tool or a sell out. I don't know the man personally, but i just don't think he should be treated like he has been just because he happens to play for Kenny G. It's probably a good thing that Stanley, Victor or Marcus stay away from here. Could you imagine the crap they would catch? Oh, and I don't understand the anger thing at all. Why would you be angry at someone that has done nothing to you, and has no impact on you're life? I don't get it. Maybe I'm just wired wrong. One good thing about this thread is at least we have all disagreed without being disagreeable:) ...er so far at least :)

Perhaps I have not read this thread carefully enough, but I have not read anything in this thread against Vail Johnson. He's a working musician operating at a high level of professionalism. The negativity I have read here is directed against the vapid, insipid, artistically empty music of his sometime employer. In a similar way, I respect Randy Jackson, even though I have a similar disdain towards some of the musical contexts in which he works.

+1 In fact, if Vail was the bassist on the ONE vid posted so far showing how good KG supposedly is, then I'm happy to say IMO Vail has tasteful and enviable chops and I admire his playing. But again, nobody has said one bad word about Vail so far anyway.
If I was good enough that Kenny G offered me the gig, then I'd have the luxury of being able hold out for a gig that doesn't involve, er, playing with Kenny G
+1 to that too. (For me, not saying anybody else should feel the same way. ;) )

+1 right on.

I just checked out some kenny g on youtube, it's muzak, and very mediocre to boot. like pouring custard in your ears. As for what he did with wonderful world, it's a crime against music.
