AFAIK, the 4001 came out in 1961 and roundwounds for bass were invented in 1962.

So it's safe to say that in the first year, everyone did.

Back in 1978 my Rickenbacker came with flat wound strings.
I changed them immediately to round wound strings.
But starting in 2025 I have installed flat wound strings on my Ernie Ball Music Man and my MTD bass.
Flat wound strings are awesome.

Owner Of A Lonely Heart was played on a different bass (either the green Mouradian or the white Electra MPC). I still really doubt Squire used flats ever again after he discovered roundwounds in the mid 60's.
