Who played Rickenbackers with flatwounds?

Owner Of A Lonely Heart was played on a different bass (either the green Mouradian or the white Electra MPC). I still really doubt Squire used flats ever again after he discovered roundwounds in the mid 60's.

Green one, I think, as it had a built in octaver (not a great one if you listen to the isolated tracks!)

I used flats on my 72 Ric 4001 for several years until I tried Rotosounds which sadly snapped one of my truss rods after a while. It was sent back to Rickenbacker for repair which took about 9 months during which time I secured a used black 71 4001 that I regret selling when the 72 was returned. Beautiful checkerboard binding on both. I used to get the Rickenbacker flat strings that came in a little red box. I think the gauge was like 40-55-75-90. The Rotos were like 45-105.

Thanks. Actually it was the isolated track that got me thinking if he had used the Electra as it had built-in -effects on it (Squire used the flanger with it quite a lot). I didn't know the Mouradian had one(s) too.
Anyway, another proof that Squire usually played the same bass live he had used on the album.

I may be wrong. I thought it was the Green one as he used that in various appearances and video at the time, so I assumed that it was the one on the track. But it's a rash assumption.

I did until I couldn’t find the warranty required Rickenbcker brand Flatbwounds. Instead I installed a set of BassBoomers and the bass didn’t disintegrate as stated in the owner’s manual. The tone was much improved and pretty much I’ve used round wounds strings ever since.

I could be mistaken ( it was a long time ago), but I read that he used his Jazz bass on that track.

I think you are mistaken. He did use the Jazz one a select number of tracks but not on that track (or the album even).
90125 is also the first Yes album by that point where there's only a couple of songs played on a Rickenbacker ("Hold On" and "It Can Happen").

The last time I saw Yes, on August 7, 2013, Chris played a ton of different basses throughout the show. So yes, he did play the basses he used to record with, the only exception being he used his Ranney 8-string in place of his Rick 8-string that he played when I saw Yes in Pittsburgh in the mid '70s (Relayer Tour, of which I saw four times from '74-'76).

ok, but owner of a lonely heart sounds like flats. I know he is know for a grindy round sound.

Keep in mind that he didn't always play the rickenbacker.

I think Leon Sylvers III played a Rick w Flats on a lot of his productions. All those Whispers jams like “And the Beat Goes On,” “Its a love Thing,” etc. Super funky.

Thread Drift: Do you remember what tune(s) on the Relayer tour Chris Squire used an 8-string bass for?
I'm guessing "Roundabout" since that was the tune he played the Ranney 8-string on when I saw them in '79 ...but I'm wondering if there are other pre-"Going For The One" tunes where he used that bass?
