Who plugs straight in? What do you use?

Thompson upright -> Realist pickup -> HPF Pre-amp -> Carvin MB10

or

Carvin Icon fretless -> Carvin MB10

Korg Pitchjack plugged into the amp's tuner output.

That's it. At home, playing along with my CDs, I'll run my Fender into some pedals now and again, but no need for pedals in any actual playing situation these days.

EDIT: Oh, I just saw the post where I'm supposed to add insight ... I'm pretty much a classical and jazz musician these days, and mostly traditional jazz, so effects just aren't called for. I'm not anti-effect - I have a few I like to mess around with at home - but in real playing situations, even in rock bands when I was younger, I just never needed them much. Plus, I just love the sound of a pure bass signal - it's so rich and versatile, I rarely feel the need for more.

I have several basses but usually use my 2011 MIA Fender Jazz Deluxe or my 2008 MIA Fender Standard Precision.

Ampeg SVT 6 Pro with 2 SVT410HE Cabs. I have a separate rack with a Furman PL8 Power Conditioner, A Sennheiser Wireless and a Korg Tuner.

Sometimes I use my 1970's Fenders or an Alembic Epic 5 string. I also have an early 1970's SVT head and 810 cab which I use occasionally.

Meh--I'd bet 99% of bassists worldwide don't even have a tuner in line, just bass and amp. You're probably thinking it's not that way just because the tech-heads and gear-heads on TB (like me) make such a production of all the gear. People don't use so many gadgets in "the real world". :)

I was part of this 99% until quite recently. A couple of months ago it would have been:

Precision copy / Epi EB-3 / Schecter Model T --> Laney Richter 8

Now it's

Precision copy / Epi EB-3 / Schecter Model T --> Ibanez Bass Tubescreamer -->Laney Richter 8

So not a lot's changed...

With an amp: Bass --> Amp (tuning done via Tuner Out and Korg CA-30 velcroed to amp)

DI only: Bass --> TU-2 (for tuning and muting) --> DI

My only bass is a Geddy Lee jazz.
My amp is a Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T and Shuttle 10T Extension cab.

I do plan to add IEM's soon. It'll be a wired system as I don't move much. Rolls Personal Monitor 50 and an extension cable for the earbuds that I will run with my bass cable. Buds TBD.
