On occasion I play around with my chorus and distortion pedals, but most of the time not. In my old band, it was bass, cord, amp. Nothing else.
For some gigs I do plug straight in, and it's usually this rig here:

I tried a couple of different compressors when I was playing with a cover band and slapping was required, but I decided to control the volume manually. The compressor seemed to negate my ability to affect the tone with my fingers, and in a battle of fingers vs. effect, fingers win.

Care to elaborate? I need one but can't spend $100 on an Fdeck pre, especially since there's a HPF in the Crest 2.0 DSP I'm saving up for. In the meantime, like I said, care to elaborate?

Depends on the band.
In my solo project incarnation I use a tone of effects.
But in my previous two bands It was
Ovation Magnum-Mesa Bass 400-Mesa 15"/Eden 15"
or in the stoner metal (not doom) act Hexe
EBMM Sterling-Mesa Bass 400-Mesa 15/Mesa 2x15.
I usually run the amp mostly flat with the amp's graphic EQ used a switchable boost.

What's the next best thing to a b15, within reach?
Yeah, +/- supply. You can cascade for a steeper roll-off but I think the resistor values need to be different in each stage IIRC.
I'm going to build my own, too. Just checking different schematics. Yeah, the gain structure would have to be modified. Not too difficult. Good effects loop or preamp to power amp idea.
