Who runs Bass -> Cable -> Amp ... no effects?

effects have their place if you're chording or doing something slow and melodic imo, but they're really not for me. like anal sex, you're kinda curious to try it and know if you like it or not after the 3rd try lolz

...of course, while many situations dont call for any effects, i'm realizing it definitely doesnt hurt your *relevance* to the current downtown music scene, especially after kanye made it cool to work with electronic guys like daft punk in this post lcd soundsystem / hot chip indie dance rock / hiphop landscape that is nyc.

being able to show people that you can pull out both a quality low end line that supports the band and that sounds interesting adds a huge cachete to you as a musician. of course, you needs chops to make those sounds viable, and finding that fine line of tasteful and just flippin' too much is a fine one indeed...

I mostly never use EQ, compression, or effects!

Oh, EXCEPT that I have a gig where the artist expects that I will play my part in substantially long improvisations and solos, using not only clean bass and synth-type sounds, but also sounds which come from what one might call "extended techniques," like all manner of chords (some non-tonal!), artificial harmonics, taps, percussion effects, fingernails scrapes on one or more strings, compressor induced feedback, fret noises, wah, distortion, cello bows, etc.

Effects (and extended techniques) are interesting and have their stylistic place, though not in most of my work (country, bluegrass, rock, jazz, theater, folk, choir). I consider it to be part of my kit/trick bag.

for shows i use my traben array > monster cable > CrateBT220 or the bass rig at the venue

for at home use i'll hook up a wah pedal and mess around with distortion as well as chorus.

Fender Jazz (& Modded Palatino EUB) > Vox cable > Mark Bass LMII > Aguilar GS112 &/or Aguilar GS115 GREAT pure sound!!!

For my rock gigs I often use a Humphrey bass Badder Monkey OD pedal tho...

I hate effects. Even on guitar, except for occasionaly delay. No offense to anyone, but they just seem like toys to me. I don't feel that they do anything but subtract from music and function, at best, as a novelty.

I do use a rack tuner, though.

At one time I used a Rat and a chorus. I felt I had to recreate some effects used on our recordings.

For the past 15 yrs. it's been bass> cord> amp. I don't even have a tuner in the chain. I do use a ToneBone for switching between instruments and as a mute, but I don't count that. Since I've been a TB'er I have really gone outside of my comfort zone trying new basses, amps and cabs. I am listening to new ideas about how to play and how to listen. But I have absolutely no desire to mess around with outboard gear, period. It distracts me from the groove. I get great satisfaction from the simplicity of my whole process and the purity of my tone.

That said, I wish I could sound like Tony Levin too! Is there a Tony stompbox I can try?

Fender 64 CS Jazz into 1973 SVT into straightback 8x10 or fliptops 4x10. Planet Waves cables and the tuner is a clip-on headstock version. I am a simple man. I like pure tube tones with Labella flats. I am boring I guess

There is something to be said about a choiced placed Chorous/ Flange/Phase/ Distortion on the Bass Signal.

There are a number of songs out there with some cool stuff on it such as old Police "Walking on the Moon", Pink Floyd etc.......

As a whole for me most of it usually gets lost in the Band Mix. For live Playing depending on the Style of Music you play FX may or may not be usefull.

I have some old stuff I recorded back in the day when I was singing Lead Vocals and Playing one hell of a Bass rig with FX. There is a part in a song that fit perfectly with this Gated Reverb sound I used over a Picked Harmonic Lick over a Guiatar Solo. It worked out really well. I'll look around and see if I can post the Soundclick Link I had.

All that being said for all the Playing I do these days most of the stuff just gets lost live in a band setting. I have opted for no FX in my rack not even a Tuner. I use a Preamp/Poweramp setup with Cab and thats it.

These days it's more for me how I get get Musical Creativity out of as least equipment as I can. Turn the Boxes off and Play Baby!
