Who runs Bass -> Cable -> Amp ... no effects?

I have used effects in my signal chain for years...just kicked them cold turkey.

i have a boss tuner that I run from the tuner out, my only gripe is that when i step on the tuner it does not mute my amp

I've been a bass straight into the amp guy for a long time. Have fooled with chorus pedals occasionally, but it's been awhile. I do have a tuner in the path now, but I haven't noticed any change with it, true bypass. I've been thinking about checking out the Tech 21 VT pedal for some extra grind, but it's not high on my priority list. Right now my chain is in my sig, Reverend PJ into a Trace Elliot V-Type into a Schroeder 1212L. Rocks. Thanks Ken.

I mixed all this on to a Tascam 34B and bounced onto an Onkyo Cassette and back.


Guitar is a little midrangy - Charvel into Hardwood Boogie IIC+.

Bass was a Gibson RD Artitst into Mesa Boogie Bass 400 - Preamp out to Art Multiverb, out to Trace Elliot Pre, out to Comressor/ Expander/ Hush II C back into Boogie 400 and Miced with an SM57.

I now go Bass-Cable-Amp and I think it's the best tone I have ever had.

Playing mostly rock, old and new, hard and soft, fingerstyle, but this setup would also be fine with a pick and in other styles.

Probably not for the hi-fi crowd; I had a setup like that before this one that I also played Bass-Cable-Amp:

That combination was also excellent -- very clear and clean sounding. If I slapped more, I'd never have given it up.

What I've got now is much thicker and punchier on the bottom end and less sparkly on the top.

Some of us could play our whole lives without effects pedals and be happy. In some styles, there just are not that many songs out there that absolutely demand a pedal.

I used to use up to 3 pedals with the disco band: volume, wah and synth. That stuff can be fun when it's all dialed in right. Also a PITA, especially when space is tight.

Now it's straight to the amp. I use mid-level cables: Canare or equiv cable with Switchcraft, Neutrik or equiv connectors.

With the passive basses I favor, it's especially important to plug straight in to a good preamp. My Alembic F-1X tube pre (in the big rig rack) and the input of my GK Micro Combo both do a great job, capturing and preserving the integrity of a passive signal.

I used to go pedal-less and loved it until I got a TC Electronic Chorus pedal. It's made me realize that with pedals you often get what you pay for, so I've explored a little more. Not all good pedals are expensive, but I haven't found one cheaper than the TC unit that I think sounds half as good. At this time I usually use only it and the effect is turned down so much you can't tell it's even on but you can hear when it's turned off.

Most of the time, I run bass->volume pedal->amp. The EB volume pedal has a tuner out which seems to take the boss TU-2 sound out of my sound. I'm probably just imagining the difference. I have to have a tuner for alternate tunings, though.

My preference would be bass->amp, though.

That said, I think effects are really cool for bass, and I envy those who can use them well. I'm just too cheap and lazy to bother.

got a monster bass cable as a gift, it's a good length and it has a 90 degree plug.

Oh, EXCEPT that I have a gig where the artist expects that I will play my part in substantially long improvisations and solos, using not only clean bass and synth-type sounds, but also sounds which come from what one might call "extended techniques," like all manner of chords (some non-tonal!), artificial harmonics, taps, percussion effects, fingernails scrapes on one or more strings, compressor induced feedback, fret noises, wah, distortion, cello bows, etc.

My amps don't have a tuner out or mute, so I run my tuners in the signal chain for muting puposes... I have A/B'd tuner/no tuner in the signal chain, and any changes are insignificant enough that I can gain back anything lost with amp settings - and are over-weighed by the convenience of being able to mute my signal to the board and my amp to tune...

I DO notice a tiny bit of signal loss when using the Strobostomp, but that's more of a function of added cable length - if I use a short patch, and set it on the amp, any signal loss is negligable... Same deal with the DTR-2000 - I use the shortest patch cables possible, and of high quality - and any losses are miniscule... I did notice more of a loss when I used a TU-2 than with the Strobostomp or DTR-2000...

I've nothing against those whom use effects - I just prefer not to...

This is where I'm at with tuners. I use the TU-2 and the ability to quickly and easily without using hands, step on it and mute my signal to tune or switch basses, is worth the minimal chnage in tone - especially in a bar/club setting where no one will notice anyway.
