Who'd win in a fight? a thread for us nerds

Someone dares challenge my geekiness? The bombers, while having superior weapons and sensors to the fighters', lacked the fighters' shields which would be essential in a fight against the Enterprise (I love that we've gone with D, btw; it's my fav!). Also, I did know what TIE stands for. Do you know why current ion engines would be a poor choice for these crafts?

Um, none of the TIE starcraft had shields until the TIE Advanced (Vader's) and the TIE Defender (Flight Sim Game). The bombers had more hull strength than the fighter, and could fire either missiles or bombs depending on the sortie, but the Fighter had superior speed and maneuverability.

All in all I would have to say that unless the Star Destroyer was equipped with a squadron or two or Tie Advanceds, they don't stand a chance. One blast or spread from some photon torpedos and the support is out for the Destroyer. With the exposed position of the shield generator on the Destroyers, as well as the ability the enterprise would have to maneuver into proper position and take out the blaster cannon turrets on the destroyer, not to mention the ingenuity of the crew of the Enterprise-D, I have to give this to the Enterprise about 9/10 times.

Based on the Star Wars games, Star Destroyers' shield generators were actually located well inside of them accessible from the fighter bay through guarded security room.

The generator maybe, but the emitters or what have you were located in the big heptahedrons or w/e they are, at least in the flight sim games.

But yea, all the Star Wars stuff is canon, anything with the Star Wars name has to be approved by Lucas Films before it gets the Star Wars name on it.

I always liked Star Wars more then Star Trek, so I'm just going to find w.e. pointless argument to back up Star Wars winning and put them in this post.
:hiding:

I know it really is just that...we all seen the Star Destroyer go down easily....
But Stars Wars and the Empire are just so cool, you can't help but wanting to be biased to making it some how possibly...for the Destroyer to be able to survive one Photon blast.

So far i like the arguments supporting the Star Destroyer.....since of course the Enterprise is the good guys, and the Empire is the bad guys........so yeah in any dumb movie the good guy wins...
and in real life evil will prevail.......

The Executor would rape the **** out of the Enterprise everytime. And as for those people talking about teleporting? Go ahead and teleport, Vader can force choke them just as easily...

exactly you can run.. Vader will find you...and sense you out.

SMPerry, I blame the Emperor for that one...the Death Star was pretty much the only thing in the Armada that had formidable shields...the Super Star Destroyer that was taken out by the A-wing was essentially a traingular Death Star, by sheer size alone, and it was counter-intuitive that such a large ship would have minimal shielding and a lack of redundant piloting sytems...I think it was a lame excuse to move the plot along than anything resembling realistic....

perfect...yes of course the Destroyers went down easy....to make the good guy win again.....what a surprising plot...Right

all this said, no ship is a match for Death Blossom.

there you go Last Star Fighter.....
Star Blossom vs Tie Fighter?
Vader himself would smash it quickly......they at least show him destroying many X-Wings

Now that you mention it I do remember some kind of shield related component on the outside of the ships so those must have been the emitters.

I still the The Star Destroyer would win though. In terms of sheer amount and range of fire power, the Destroyers are just armed to the teeth. And of course that weaponry is all over the ship capable of attacking any enemy at nearly any angle. IIRC there are four ion canons at each entrance to the loading bay so that's eight total and I'd guess that each can effectively fire at angles up 150 degrees. Supposing that the Enterprise is within range, a few solid hits would surely take out it's shields at the very least.

And of course the irony is not lost on anyone that a one-manned stunt fighter took out the SHIELD EMITTER WITH A COUPLE SMALL CRAFT LASER BLASTS......you know, AT THE SHOULD BE STRONGEST SOURCE AREA of the actual SHIELDS. Yeah, talk about effective, convenient plot motivation. More like lazy.

This is assuming the type of shielding used between the two is the same, and that the Enterprise wouldn't be able to set it's shields to rotating harmonics to counteract the ion cannons, or that it would even go that way to begin with.

Let's also not lose sight of the fact that the Galaxy-class Starship isn't exactly a limp-wristed research vessel. It's got up to 12 phaser banks, can fire up to 10 independently targetted photon torpedoes, and has an absurdly high capacity deflector grid, not to mention a deflector array that can be configured to do a whole bunch of stuff (feedback pulses, tachyon bursts, etc).

I still go with my original assessment that Picard, Data, Worf, Geordi, Riker, et al > any Imperial Star Destroy and it's crew, any day.

If we were dealing with the Enterprise-E here, or a Sovereign-class, there wouldn't even be room for doubt.
