Squier was a separate company that Fender bought in 1965. An Epiphone is a bass manufactured by Gibson. Current Rockbasses have the Warwick "W" logo front and center. The Squier logo has a tiny "By Fender" added. Subtle differences, I suppose, but a Squier should not be advertised simply as a Fender.

Agreed and that was some history I didn't know about.
Except that the Squier company Fender bought didn't make guitars or basses. They repurposed the brand name when they decided to make lower cost instruments.
I would imagine that what they want to do is sell the bass for the price listed, in which case, they are not successfully doing what they want with their property.
Well, this could be another one of those "honest, honey, I really tried to sell it, see, here's the ad on craigslist" cases.
Well, for that price it better come with a box.

The seller is doing it all wrong.
If you are going to con people by saying "Fender" rather than "Squier," you need to put a fake Fender decal on the headstock. Then it's a good honest con job.

Maybe the seller needs to use the recently sold items search on ebay? No one will ever buy that. Not even Japanese Squiers go for that much...
I'd say the tiny script proclaiming "by Fender" pretty much insures people will claim it's a Fender. Especially those with just enough recent internet investigation to have seen plenty of multi thousand dollar beat up old Fenders without bothering to read up on why they were priced that high, and when the local expert said "left handed Fender PJ! In mint condition? Dude, you just won the lottery!"
Having been dragged to a few estate sales by wifey, the emphasis always seems to be on antique furniture, firearms, and high end china, silver service, etc. I saw a newish epiphone flat top sell for $25 and I snagged a really decent MIA strat to give my brother for his next birthday, for $125 at the same sale, so I'd imagine if the guy has more than a C note in his new bass it would be a surprise.
But the ad did include some bass-porn...

I'd say clueless. Lefty Squier PJs are all over the place, especially on CL. I see them all the time. And for MUCH less money. I think this fellow is just uninformed, I don't think he's trying to hoodwink anybody.
It'll suck for the sap who falls into the trap, but as long as you yourself is well-educated about basses and the differences and all that jazz, then it's no harm to you. It doesn't matter for you if you're not going to buy or haggle the price so why bother?
Either way, try messaging the seller and kindly correct him.
