Who's Overrated? Who's Underrated?

Fieldy is WAY UNDERRATED.
I don't get all the hate he gets on this forum. I can understand people not caring for his playing or his band, but it's wrong to bash him on every occasion.
Fieldy has a sound that fits his band, a band that created (with other bands) a new genre. Whether you like nu-metal or not, it's a fact. The man has accomplished more than most of us can dream of:
- he created his own playing style, he doesn't sound like anybody else.
- he helped create the nu-metal sound
- he grooves in a metal context, not a common thing in metal.
- he inspired a lot of kids to play bass (including me when I was 16 or 17) by playing the bass like a different instrument, not just an octave-down version of the guitar. (again, not that common in metal).

For these reasons I think the man deserves respect, so don't be immature and stop bashing.

What I consider an achievement is finding your own sound and style, it's all I said. So please stop twisting what I wrote.

"The reason he doesn't sound like anybody else, is because nobody wants to sound like him" I have absolutely no problem with that, I just said he created his own style. I have no problem with people being indifferent to his playing either, to each his own. What I can't stand is hating.

No, no he wasn't. John Entwsitle was miles ahead of him in terms of everything. Add that John influenced the whole Rock genre, which is one of the wider, if not widest, genres in history while Jaco influenced Jazz, Fusion and some other people by chance, like DiGiorgio. Is it really that amazing that someone played fretless? I know it was electric, but the bassist from Genesis did it first and nobody sacrifices three virgins for him everyday. People have been soloing on fretless for countless years. Jaco did it on electric, of course he added his sound to it which does sound amazing but not what it's hyped up to be, and somehow he's voted to be the best electric bassist of all time? Pfft. It's just like EVH, he modified his own instrument to fit his needs, he took further an already established technique, sounded great while doing so.


Wow, lets all go summon Beelzebub so we can give him 3 pints of virgin blood to thank him for his gifts. I'm not saying that Jaco wasn't a virtuoso, I'm saying that everyone looks up to him as the de facto bass god, plus mention his name every five seconds. Matter of fact, how many people play eletric fretless? Then ask yourself how many people play with roundwound strings, aggresive, piano tones with active electronics. Why do you think roundwounds are so famous? People back then mostly used flats.

I kind of have to agree with this. I love Entwistle. For a short while, I was getting into Jaco, and then I just grew bored of it.

On a side note, you get fired up about Entwistle being called overrated like I get fired up about Gene Simmons being called overrated, even though Gene is nowhere near as talented as Entwistle..

He doesn't get flamed or anything like that, but I've just never seen anyone talk about him, which is really a shame. Doesn't have megachops or anything, but has a real feel for the music he's playing. A classic example of those 70's fusion players IMO. Here's a few links:

Entwistle doesn't interest me in the slightest, I tried to listen to him but I can't enjoy. I'll take Jaco over him anyday, not only was Jaco an amazing bassist but a amazing composer as well.

Why are you people arguing Entwistle over Jaco. Do you have nothing better to do. You have different idols. Jaco isn't all that great and Entwistle, well, I don't personally like him. 5:15 sounds like garbage, he is playing so fast and so distorted how can you even consider that music?

I'll put a few rebuttals in.

Noel Redding -- hardly underrated. He was very average and supposedly a very slow learner. All his parts were written by Hendrix.

Tony Levin -- a terrific musician but I've always wondered why people think he's so great.

No one would say Myung is underrated. I don't even care for his playing or his music but I accept that he's heralded.

Fieldy is in a group that got big quickly and then died out. He made the most of his celebrity by trying to promote himself. I don't think anyone took him that seriously. At the same time, he's fine. Nothing special, but competent. If he were in a better band people would be saying how great he is.

Leo Lyons. Yes! Great player -- and considered so at the time but his legacy hasn't carried into the modern age.

Ron Wood was very unique because he played like a frustrated guitarist on the bass. Then he switched to guitar and sounds like a frustrated guitarist on the guitar.
