Why all the Tal smack talk?

Listening to Tal play her fretless was just like that.

She's the reason I de-fretted my bass instead of having it re-fretted and now I'm spending a lot of time these days learning for myself how to play in that style. Even though I've been playing for more than 20 years, I hope that I can be close to her ability in another 20.

She plays fretted, not fretless....

Why all the Tal smack talk?

"Why all the Tal hype?" would be an equally appropriate question.

Maybe not everyone is a fan of hers and with all the hype(justified as it may be), maybe some feel tempted to counter-steer a little.
Useful or not...:)

I personally woud say that it's not my place to diss anyone.

She gets work, good for her. :)

Tal is a talented bassist, who can groove her butt off.
It just happens to be a very nice butt.
If her looks have help her in marketing herself.
Good for her.
Bottom line, she can play.
!!!!!!!RESPECT!!!!!!!

Stop hatin'...she can play, is good lookin' and female..Got more soul then a million of those dudes who play a bunch of notes...NEWS FLASH....the people sitting in row 57 don't care if it's an augmented chord...IT SOUNDS GOOD...Go 'head Tal

have to agree...just listened to her cd yesterday for about the 10th. Love her playing. Probably one of my favorite albums that I have purchased in the last year.
I once made a comment about Ringo Starr's drumming and my father looked at me and said. "He's there and your not".

She is young: check
She is a she: check
She is attractive?: :rollno: (Pretty freakin' ugly if you ask me)

Anyhow, her longevity will be the ultimate test to prove all the haters wrong or right. She isn't going to be marginally attractive for much longer. Hippy chicks never are.

She's playing with jazz cats, not Lady Gaga.......I really don't think Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock care how cute she is.

I just read an e-mail from Tal's web site - she is on the Herbie Hancock 3 month tour including Europe and 70th Anniv gigs at Carnegie Hall and The Hollywood Bowl.

I'm an old guy - when I was growing up the greatest gig a musician could have was playing Carniegie Hall.:bassist:

I guess these days the greatest gig is 150 seconds on The Jay Leno Show.:crying:

This is entirely your opinion- apparently not shared by Beck, Colaiuta, Hancock, Corea, etc etc. Do you think there is any incentive for these guys to do anything to risk sounding bad? This simply sounds like a little case of sour grapes.

For what it is worth, my opinion is that she is a heavy groover and a pretty good soloist. I also think she's cute, and she has a lot of enthusiasm......probably not bad attributes for these grizzled 50 and 60-year olds to share the road with.

Since everyones talking trash or singing praises I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring. I respect her as a musician. I think she is talented and quite fortunate to be in the place she is in at this point in her journey as a bassist. All the best of luck to her.
That being said I have to wonder about the hype myself. I've watched and listened to a fair amount of her and I actually find her playing kind of lackluster. While she can play lines from some of the great bassists and hit the right notes at the right time her delivery in solos and or the stuff I've seen with Beck or video in bass seminars just lacks power and fire. I think most are caught up in the novelty of a little girl bass player which adds to the hype. There are plenty of female players that could do a much better job and play circles around her, probably on this forum too.

This my opinion on her playing and I mean her no personal disrespect. She's living the dream and that's good.

I think there are some intangibles at play here too, maybe the people she plays with feel their game lifted a bit, maybe she is just a great hang[one of the most important things on getting and keeping a gig], just like love, it's not always easy for those on the outside to know what the chemistry of a particular marriage is.
