Why all the Tal smack talk?

Naw Esperanza's got haters out there... alot of people prefer her singing to her bass playing. Not talking about me, just the infinite cesspool of gossiping surrounding this industry. She's definitely got that thing I love about Tal- infinite positivity, and no visible ego.

If some of the young fellas don't learn how to mellow out, soon the girls are going to have all the gigs!:D

All in good humor.

I remember one negative comment about Esperanza on TB and it came from someone who seemed to have a personal grudge against her. She and Tal are becoming known at the same time so we will see who goes on to full fill the promise they both show, the sad part is that there are probably many more great young female players we know nothing about.

I think Vail Bass might, just might have a Marcus Miller album in his collection.:p Nice! Isn't this about the time "Run for Cover" came out? I can tell from the hair and the jean tightness...

No videos but at her age I was sawing away at Mozart and Beethoven in a sweaty practice room. Lame.

How someone gets chops at a young age is of course very obvious, but I didn't get taste like either of those girls until much much later. Thank G8d I did, or I might have had to get a day job!

well, here's what I was doing at that age ( a long, long time ago!!)

Nice Vail, you look the same now! that's the thing;many people were doing prominent gig by 22,hell by the time I was 22 I had played with Stanley Turrentine,Bobby Broom, Hamid Drake,Sugar Blue and some other notables and I'm not talking about college hook up's but actually got called for the gig. Like i said elsewhere in this discussion there's a lot of different reasons people get called for gig's and I might ask;has she played with Chick since that tour?

I would say that Vail and Marcus are more contemporary's with common influences A'la Larry graham and Louis Johnson. Chi-Dub I don't know how old you are but one of the thing's i have found in younger musicians these day is the idea that a tree only has one branch.

don't confuse having a gig or gigs with talent, circumstances can have as much or more to do with getting gigs than talent. also consider this; what or rather who is the constant factor in not only her CD but most of the high profile gigs she has done? Vinnie Colaiuta

I thought it was Keith Carlock on her disk. Maybe I'm mistaken.

So Vinnie is taking her on good gigs. I doubt he would bother if he did not feel she was talented enough to work with these players.
I just watched the Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's DVD last night.
Loved it. Tal plays beautifully, supports the music, meshes perfectly with the other players.
I think that's all that really matters.

I watched the Crossroads DVD, (before I even heard of Tal) and Jeff Beck comes on and I see this short little girl with EBS amps towering above her and a Sadowsky....and I said if Jeff has her on stage she must be a "prodigy".....and I think I was on the right track...loved the segment!!!!..especially the Billy Cobham tune..I'd like to be able to "play it" that easy..and be smiling along the way!!!
Hope she has a long and productive career!!

Esperanza Spaulding, the youngest musician PERIOD to hold a coveted instruction chair at Berkley maybe, doesn't need to tour with any "BIG names in the industry" because she's already a household name among the elite and non-elite bass worlders, alread has two albums out, has won countless awards local AND global, gets praise from giants in the bass world such as Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and Billy Sheehan? Don't hear any Jealousy or reverse criticism about HER, and wait...she's a girl!!! She's REALLY good looking and...OMG, she's just 25!!! Riddle solved, no hating here either.

Oh yeah :)

That is so true. As a much lesser musician from that generation, I can attest that everybody was rockin' the bass like that back in the late Seventies and early Eighties if they had the ability. As Brad Johnson often says, the Marcus Miller tone is very much a Seventies Jazz Bass tone because most everyone from that time who played a similar bass sounded like Marcus.:)

Look it, heres the thing of Tal's gig for me.

I knew Jeff was doing some new stuff so I went to watch the clips from the Hall of Fame induction. I watched and was blown away.I had no idea who Tal was, but I knew I was like saying, what the hell is going with the bass, who the hell is this chic.

Then I went to the recent show in Milwaukee, I was standing in front of the stage 3 feet away from Tal. There were some TBers up there that gave me the whole story, it didn't suprise me.

Bottom Line She's all good.

From my perspective, I saw nothing wrong with folks being a bit critical or taking a poke or two at her. That is part of being in the public eye, however, I think we all need to give the Tal debate a rest. The points have all been made. I just wish her well in her career.:bassist:

all the political correctness aside: you gotta admint, it would be better if she wore skimpy clothes and dressed sexy (aka almost nothing on). she obviously needs a new manager!

if this was a guitar forum, they'd be all over how they want her to reveal more... just proves that bass is more cerebral, or like that video going around how we never get laid... this proves the point! lol luckily i'm married already or i'd never get a hob babe anymore now that i play bass... unless she played bass too

We have alot of mutual friends but I've never met her in person. By all accounts, a kind hearted and hungry person.

Gotta say, taking the plunge at a young age seems to be a common thread for "making it." However she afforded it, LA at 16 seems like a great compliment to drive and talent. Very few people are willing or able to put their lives on the line like that.

She comes from a family that has money, that's how she afforded it.

No. This is naive. Let the truth be known, if it is important. All the points have not been made. With all respect to you, Dr. Cheese.

Walls do talk. But, she will do fine in her career, in spite of anything debated here.
