why are Foderas so expensive?

Ace ace ace. I thought it was only me that got on pedantic high horses. I feel much happier not to be alone.

I can't be bothered reading through the many - and long - responses in this thread, but does any contributor actually OWN a Fodera?

So if you're out there: I'd like to know what drove your decision to buy a Fod; what made you choose it over other magnificent-appearing boutique basses? Let's have it from the (high) horse's mouth.

You should read the thread.
I explained why I have a Fodera..and why it was a successful experience.

I actually OWN 2 of them.

An Anthony Jackson Presentation 6 string and a Monarch 4 string.

The Monarch I bought new and the AJ I was lucky enough to grab on the used market. My reasoning simply I had the money and I like them, enough reason for me :D

so, what's the deal..? does it get much better than this? my sadowsky and FBB both are flawless to me,(after a good setup) and another thing..90% of "perfect" is SET-UP!

good bass+ bad setup= crap
bad bass + good setup= decent
so, therefore, my equation holds water....si? or no?

and yes, i'll agree this thread is getting silly, but I do really want to know..seriously,
can it really get much better than this? excluding fancy inlays, woods, decorative stuff..

"excluding fancy inlays, woods, decorative stuff" why would you want anything more than your Sadowsky? Foderas go the extra step with art as well, that is what a lot of people underestimate.

I paid about 8 grand for an engagement ring, that thing does NOTHING!!!! Unless you consider reflecting light something, which I don't.

Oh C'MON!!!!??? You KNOW what it does is keep your wife from yelling at you for spending so much time here.:rollno: :D

Got a question, just hypothetically, If a custom bass builder, lets just say VF came to you with a great looking bass in his hand, handed it to you and said "Play it, feel it and if you like it, I'll let you have it for the price YOU think is reasonable, no gimmicks, no questions asked" how many of you that support those prices would actually pay them then? Just Curious, because I for one am in the minority that thinks certian builders get utterly rediculous with pricing, yet, everyone feels and thinks about things in how it relates to his/her logic, so why are so many posting reasons as to why Mr. Fodera charges what he does? Only he really knows. My reasoning on the subject was simple, after hearing Victor Wooten doing "Teen Town" side by side with Marcus Miller, it became very clear what I thought about the prices of Foderas. It's simple, pay what YOU feel it's worth, if you think paying a gazillion dollars is cool for what YOU want, fine, no one else has to live with that, if you think its worth rat's piss, fine also. It's obvious as long as there is someone is willing to pay it, they will price it as they see fit. The art thing is a matter of taste and/or prefence IMO, to me, my 5 year olds attempts at drawing her dog are the most priceless pieces that exist, yet, if I put them on ebay for $8,000, all I'd have to do is sell ONE and I could sell more for that price as long as there's an audience for them, and, as with this issue, some would think that I am insane for charging those prices. Fodera's are cool, but I've just heard better and played better sounding/feeling basses for less than half the price, for real, all a matter of tastes and THAT is was justifies...or not, the costs.

Going into the 15th round of a 12 round match.....

I have just consulted with Jaco via psychic medium and I have the definitive answer with no possibility of wavering on all variables:

"Sadowsky Metros are the Universe's expression of the best possible combination of all factors for an electric bass guitar". Even Sadowsky NYCs dont reach their supernatural height...they are truly God's bass and according to "Jaco" you can never ever ever do any better . You have purchased THE BEST bass ever known and that is a wonderful thing. Man, congrats..its all over..you nailed it !!

HAVE FUN PLAYING!

I know I love my Metro... ;)

I think if I could afford an other bass.... I'd get a Alleva Coppolo, but then I gotta thing for Fenderesque basses.

You guys can argue this until you are blue in the face! There is NO explanation for the prices of Fodera basses. We all agree that they are excellent instruments. But what makes them twice the price of other master luthiers. Are they growing special trees with magical wood? Are they using special electronics made on another planet? Is Vinny really that much better than Tobias, Sadowski, Benevente, Skjold, Roscoe, Alembic, etc, etc, ad nauseum. Come on guys. Fodera is The Nike of Basses and Vic Wooten is Michael Jordan and Matt Garrison is Labron James and Anthony Jackson is Dr. J. When you have all of the bass god superstars you can overprice your product. If your rich enough to own one, great! just admit you have one because you can afford it, not because it is somehow better than every other custom bass.
