Why are most short scale demos played with a pick??

i'm beginning to think that some just wait for this type of thread to develop, hoping for a chance to get mad. I thought forums were to help those that might need it, not get pissed at billy bob for using a pick, or jimmy bob for finger banging the strings, lol

So playing only with a pick is "unprofessional"? I guess since I only play with a pick now a demos with only fingers should seem "unprofessional" to me?

The first few hits of a YouTube search for "short scale bass" turned up a LOT more demos with fingers than with the pick.

An unprofessional demo does not have to be performed by a professional player and doing something for a living does not dictate that said person does anything in a professional manner.

I know a bunch of pros that used only picks!

Carol Kaye is one of them! You can' t get more professionnel.

She even has her own signature pick!

But that has nothing to do with what we expect (or not) of a good bass demo!

His point was that it is unprofessional (I would choose another word but I understand) to offer demo videos that only include one playing technique.

What's more interesting is how personally you took that and interpreted it as a comment on the professionalism with playing with a pick. Which it wasn't. That's where you maybe missed the point.

I play my Violin bass with a pick most of the time because my big fingers struggle with the 15mm string spacing.

I play shorties and use flats on them, so my demos are always finger style...

Calling shenanigans on this entire thread. Most shortie demos I saw on Youtube with a random selection of typing "short scale bass" had the person demoing both pick and fingers. So you're apparently not trying to find fingerstyle demos. Either that or you watch the first 5 seconds of a demo that starts with pick playing and don't bother fast forwarding.

I believe that Matt Malley from the Counting Crows used to do so as well.

I don't even leave the house without a pick.

A lot of bass demos are done by guitarists because the bassists are all busy getting ready for gigs
