Why are most short scale demos played with a pick??

They are probably guitarists. :roflmao: Not used to the long scale of basses, and (most of the time) can't play fingerstyle for their lives! :facepalm:

Perhaps some short scale basses just sound especially good with a pick... like a mustang bass perhaps? Isn't that kind of rock-ish sounding? I'm not too familiar with them myself.

I think OP had been looking for demos of specific basses rather than just searching for short scale generically. But I can't tell exactly.

I think you used the wrong wording here, if you had said "I find it very unhelpful" you would probably have avoided all the TB pedants piling on you, as it is they seem to be having a field day.

Don't be put off, most of the members here are perfectly reasonable people as you will discover if you stick around long enough (If you don't I can't say that I blame you, their reaction in this thread is enough to drive anyone away).

My experience with short scale demos differs from yours, I'm afraid. Most of the ones I can recall either weren't played with a pick, or were played with a pick and by hand. And, not much slapping going on, either. I suppose it just depends on which bass you're watching demos of.. In my case, very few of the basses I've watched demos of, would ever be seen in the hands of a metal or punk bass player... But, if you want to play many notes quickly - like metal/punk players seem to do - then, playing with a pick is certainly one good way to do it...:cool:

There is about a million years of experience here on Talkbass, grasshopper. I suggest you will learn more by listening than by talking. I learn something every time I read Talkbass and I've been playing bass for almost 40 years. Oh, and I've used a pick on every single one of the 2000+ shows I've played.
