Why are most short scale demos played with a pick??

She finds the reviews and / or demos in which a proctor only demonstrates pick technique to be lacking. It doesn't mean pick players are unprofessional. If you don't get I question a lot about your thought process.

I undeestand that, but I just dont understand why every demo I have tried to watch for the past 2 days is played only with a pick. I find it very unprofessional, and I only just started trying to play, but reall. . Comon sence...

The perception of whether or not a demo was well done does not require that you've played bass your whole life. Statisticians call that a false correlation which is to change context for the purpose of proving a dubious point.

Shorties often have tighter string spacing. I pick my short scales most (not all) of the time because it seems natural. Fingers most (not all) of the time on the P bass because it's easier.

For me this includes a lot of very good amateur stuff that you can find on YouTube.

My second post was meant to defend her point of view. (which I don 't share to 100%)

Just because she got so much backfire, for her initial post and because the thread had totally derailed!

These guys do the best demo's that I've seen....
Both pick and fingers used....Thorough description of the bass and, in this case, a tasty version of Zep's 'No Quarter' to finish...

I bought my Joker on the strength of this vid....

Great decision!....

Don't like red basses, don't care about hollow basses, don't mind short scale basses but OMG this one is SPECIAL and just thick all the good marks!!!

Ok guys!!! Dont twist my words around. I didnt say theres something wrong wirh a pick!!! Although I hate hearing bass played with a pick, I kept that to myself UNTIL NOW, since you anyway responed to me as if I did!!!@
You cant hear the full sound of the bass listening to it only played with a pick. I have only started to play, and you can play 50 years but you wouldnt convince me what I say is not true.
Its not about tast its about hearing the full sound range!!

Didn't read all the posts. My opinion- a pick adds a bit of clarity and / or definition to the bass line. You can play any way you choose. When I'm playing the Hofner or Mustang, I tend to use a pick. That's the way I see it.

the text you are quoting is completely out of context. as a stand alone statement yes I would agree with you but it was never said that using a pick is unprofessional. Again, she is clearly stating that playing with only a pick in the demo is unprofessional and does not give an accurate representation of the overall sound of the bass.

I get it, you use a pick and are awesome and can get great tones, but your reading comprehension.......... meh

If you were in my classroom and tried to use such cherry-picked, out of context evidence to support your claim, you'd be given the opportunity to revise your post. I'd also question your comprehension of the text, and probably pair you up with a stronger reader in the room to help you more clearly understand the author's central claim and line of reasoning.
