Why are most short scale demos played with a pick??

A thorough bass demo would include at least a bit of fingerstyle and pick and slap playing.
A professional bass player doesn't need to be good at every technique, they just need to be good at the techniques that the genres they typically play call for.
Demo makers aren't all professionals. Surprise!

These guys do the best demo's that I've seen....
Both pick and fingers used....Thorough description of the bass and, in this case, a tasty version of Zep's 'No Quarter' to finish...

I think Adrian's videos are really unfair. He's such a good player, can you really tell how you'll sound?
I have anxiety over this as I have an Elwood on order 
I highly doubt that most online bass demos featuring short scale basses are played the way you described.
Comon sence is commonly spelled with 2 M's.

Short scales can seemingly lack clarity. The picks adds attack.
I have I tried many short scales and my overall impression is as always; between strings/fingers/nails/pick/thumb/palm muting/fret hand muting/plucking hand placement/fret muting/hammers&pulls and basic eq one can make anything interesting and good.
Its a good idea for a demo to have as many of the aforementioned techniques in it - not just one.

Plenty use a pick. I'll bet none of them use a pick ONLY and never anything else. That is what the OP was talking about, not the use of a pick at all.
I don't think it has much to do with people twisting your words, some of your statements are unclear and vague and your leaving it up to the readers to fill in the small details. Be more specific with your words or don't get so upset when people try filling in the blanks. My two cents I'll leave it at that
So, by the same logic, since I play 34" scale basses primarily with a pick....when it's time for me to buy a new bass and many demo videos show either finger-style only or 90% fingers and 10% pick (usually with poor pick technique), does that make those videos unprofessional? Or does it mean I should stop being lazy, go to a music store and try some basses with MY technique to see what works best for me? I'd rather look inward and see how I can change that situation than calling people names they don't deserve.

I know a bunch of pros that used only picks!
Carol Kaye is one of them! You can' t get more professionel.
She even has her own signature pick!
But that has nothing to do with what we expect (or not) of a good bass demo!
