Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

...I love that red 5'er that has the old school Peavey knobs on it. It's real pretty....

Thanks. The thing was missing pickups and hardware when I got it and was pretty beat up. But the neck was fine and had it withstood all the abuse due to the QUALITY construction. Only paint chips and dings. I put in the T-40 pickups so now I have 5 string T-40 with the preamp. Also has a Hipshot D-tuner on the E string as does the Koa.

Thanks mech, don't mind if I do! For the record I would put these up against ANY neck through, at any price. That includes the Alembic I have that someone once told me had decent build quality.

I still have '88 Peavey Dyna Bass Unity Series that I've owned since '92. A true "Player's Bass"

I've installed new a EMG X P/J set of pups with an EMG BQS EQ System last year. Voice of the gods now... :bassist:

Got a hipshot on it too!

The damned thing is what? 25 years old now? Just this past weekend I did a fresh setup on it and by-golly I'm still able to get PERFECT intonation all the way to the 21st fret on all 4 strings with some really low action. Surely a crappy bass! :eyebrow: The neck is still amazing after all these years. Got enough of my DNA in the fretboard that I could be cloned from it!

And look at this one:

OH THE G.A.S.! :hyper:

It's been listed for months. Follow the link to the Photobucket gallery, and you'll see the damage to the headstock.

The damage appears to be cosmetic, unless I'm missing something. That refinished paint job is more cosmetic damage than the ding on the headstock. Regardless, I recall this being listed on GC's used site for a seemingly endless period of time.

I've eyeballed that one.

I believe Mark Beem has a marbled TL-5 the same color that has been documented by the factory. I have a 90s Generation guitar that I know came from the factory with a gold/black marbled finish. It's what I call a Peavey Telewhupper.

LOVE that pic. I really wish my hands fit the neck. I tried for a good while but it just doesn't work for me. Stubby fingers. I need to find a really cheap :help: TL-5 of either gen and put a P/J set on it. I wouldn't care if it was a bare body.

Ahh I still remember when I had my dad's old Peavey T60 (back before I got my very own bass just alittle over a year ago). That thing had the most thunderous tone of any bass I've played or heard, but then again that thing weighed 13 lbs... Probably why it can still be found for around $300 online haha.

He should probably goto the Luthier's page and tell them that they are doing cheaply. If you look at all the work they post more than half have different widths. Ridiculous.

Not all builders are that good to take more time to achieve perfection...

Why Fodera build every single bass with the neck-through block with the same width of the neck? Why dont build a huge block with a narrower neck???
DO YOU THINK ITS THE SAME???
He, and most of the good builders think different...

Actually, you said that Peaveys weren't well-constructed because the block exceeded the neck width instead of matching it, which is ridiculous. When we're talking about Peavey basses that are more than 20 years old, attacking build quality seems a poor choice on your part.

When you pay more for hand-picked wood, custom features, someone's time to hand-build, one-off components, hand-built electronics, hand-finishing, etc, you're choosing to pay for time that Peavey has cut out with their manufacturing processes and parts sourcing. Again, all this expense takes place long before you have any discussion of quality.

You're welcome to explain how Fodera uses better wood glue than Peavey does, or how a person can laminate wood better than a machine can.

Its not ridiculous. All good builders do that way, they build the neck through matching block and neck widths...
Just check every fodera or others high end neck throughs.
If "Its the same" why they take more time to do that way?

Im not saying a SArzo is BAD constructed. Just said ITS NOT A HIGH END NECK THROUGH. Its just better than the other Peaveys...

I have an 80's Fury that plays and sounds great. Yes, I have Fenders too, but I'll never get rid of that Fury.

I also have a Predator (USA made Stratacaster clone) that I keep in my practice space for whatever guitarists who happen to come through to use. They rave about how it plays. (I bought it for $79!)
