Why aren't G&L basses more popular?

Ok.

On the other hand, Fender Jazz and Fender Precision, and all there clones have always seemed quite comfortable to me.
G&L too.

I really like the sound and playability of the L-2500, but in all honesty I'm hung up on the no pickguard look. I can handle no pickguard on a figured top, but on the straight and burst colors it just has no visual personality to me.

Killer basses though.

I've seen them with a pickguard, made specially for them, and I think it looks great. Actually better than great.

Although I couldn't stand a pickguard on my L1505. The transluscent red and grain pattern needs to be free and clear:D

I'd never even had a thought of them until I walked into a local GC and there was my bass hanging on the wall. I plugged it in and it blew my mind. Then I plugged in a Stingray and Sterling and went back and forth between the 3. I couldn't believe how much more presence and aggressiveness was on tap, not to mention volume!

I bought it on the spot.

Why aren't they more popular? Mainly two reasons I think:

1. Their dealer network is poor, especially outside the USA. They have generally only been available in scattered mom & pop music stores and even those never carry the full product line.

2. They have never had a top-level endorser. Imagine what could have happened to the brand if in the 80s Geddy used an L-2000 instead of a Wal. Look at EBMM, their popularity went way up because Flea used one, even though it was only for a short time. Yet there are still Stingray sales on eBay with "Flea" in the headline.

I think G&L had a long stagnant period after BBE took over the company but now they are moving forward. New products like the M-series, limited editions to stoke the gas and the Tribute line should help them. They just need to get their products in more stores so that players can get their hands on one.

Too bad I couldn't afford it at hand (just like a US StingRay...)

I think I never saw any Tribute L1500/L1505

If you guys think an L2000 is complex, try wrapping your brain around a minimoog. :D now thats a challenge to play live. The L2K is unbelievably simple to use. Tweak less. Know what your knobs and switches do. :o :)

I have no idea why they arent more popular. Lame rumors about them being complicated dont help. Especially when they come from places like bp magazine. Visually i think they are very distinct in their simplicity. Classy and utilitarian.

As long as you know what the knobs and switches do, these basses are stupid simple and easier to adjust on the fly than a lot of other basses. I love the series/parallel switch on my L1505.

I don't think anyone is saying that. If someone personally doesn't care for the tone of G&L thats cool. What I was trying to say is that some think these are complicated basses. They are really not complicated at all.
