Why aren't G&L basses more popular?

I do not understand why the "they are not in stores" thing comes from. Maybe it is regional. I have spent the past few evenings hitting a lot of the music shops around the Twin Cities. Every one of them except the G.C.'s had plenty of them hanging on the wall's, both Tribute & USA. They are great basses at good prices with better or equal QC compared to other basses in their price range & above.

Now if I could just find a store that has the bass that I am looking for....

I know of at least three places in So Cal that stock them... TrueTone in Santa Monica; Buffalo Bros in Carlsbad... and some other place in LA I can't recall the name...

Good basses... I'm convinced what separates them from EBMM is that Flea never played one on TV, so they never exploded.

And they are a GREAT value used!

I think that the headstock is awesome #1.

#2 I like the necks and spacing on a G&L way better than most Rays and Fenders that I have tried.


But in all honesty, they just don't get their name out and about like other companies do. I've only ever actually seen one (a fretless 4, an L2000?) and it was used. I went back to GC when I had the cash but it had been snatched up. I loved that bass :crying:

I disagree. I happen to like those control plates even though neither of mine have one.

There aren't many G&Ls around my area.
The absolute best feeling Strat and Tele I've ever played are both G&Ls, the Strat is owned by my band's guitar player, and the Tele is owned by his brother. Really, really, fantastic guitars. Love the necks.

If their basses feel the same way, then I'd have one, no problem.
Never played one yet, but I'd prefer a 5 string Jazz (which I know they don't make).
Maybe I'll mod a G&L JB to a 5 string some day.

"Just for the record, the pointy "eye gouger" on the headstock was George's idea.

While it may appear to be non-functional, it's not. The gouger is actually an ingenious "anti-lemming filter".

It acts as a disturbing visual repellent. Players with a lemming mentality are instantly so un-nerved by the headstock shape that they won't even bother to play or listen to a G&L.

In this way, G&L mantains a level of exclusivity, appealing only to those players who judge a bass with their hands and ears.

You've heard this before...."G&L's are not for everyone". :D"

I purchased two brand new tribute l-2000s here in olympia wa. I think the store had them for about 2 years. I purchased them both for well under retail, and the owner was glad to be rid of them, and I was glad to have em. This shop also carries stingrays so those seem to be his priority.
I told him he should at least keep one l-2000 in stock...especially blueburst...:D

Heh, I knew someone would say something about the spacing being too tight right after I posted but I didn't expect to be at the exact same time.

I know we're outnumbered but please just leave the few manufacturers still making closer spaced five-strings alone. :o

No problem because that's exactly what I did... left them alone.

Because there's no way a company could offer two string spacings. You don't have to stop one to offer the other. Most successful builders figured out the demand for wider spaced basses was worth going after that business... years ago. But GO G&L!

Agreed, chunky baseball bat necks that have too narrow of string spacing as I ranted in a prior posting. I think if they offered one with 19 mm spacing, (Like Carvin does now with SB5000) they would capture much more of the market.

If Carvin can change horses, anyone can.

Jim's Music in Tustin carries G&L as well.

ive seen a lot of pros play them, but i dont see them around. its a very exclusive little club, and i dont really see them trying to change them.

oh yea.. and for some reason their guitars are FUGLY. the basses are tolerable.. but those guitars just look.. off.. to me.
