Why did YOU sell your Schroeder?

I'm just a little confused as well that they'd be described as "hollow"...I can see using that description for something really scooped sounding, which the Schroeders are not. Kind of the opposite of scooped, really...I guess that's why I have trouble with the lack of explanation or thoughtful description.

I don't own a Schroeder, but I have heard them on multiple occasions.

Reef, if you don't care that anyone reads your posts...why bother?

perhaps "farting out" is the incorrect technical term; the distortion and buzz were absolutely not compression, nor was it "doppler effect". the cabs just didn't work for me: the sound broke up at a volume it should not have.

in any event, i am sure they work well for others. thankfully there are so many great choices available today.

Are you sure one of the speakers wasn't reverse wired ?

I wouldn't associate the word "hollow" with a scooped sound. To me, it would describe a cabinet that has an enhanced mid presence (probably more upper mids than lower mids), with decreased lows and highs. While the Schroeders do have an upper mid hump, I think the lows and low mids are still sufficient enough so as NOT to project a hollow sound.

The one thing I'm having a hard time understanding is Reefer's comments (as well as the reviewers he cites on bgra.net) regarding the tweeter. I find it to be very smooth and natural sounding, much more so that most of the other cabinets I've played through.

- Ugly.

I can change my mind for what I look for in a speaker cabs tonality from time to time, but I would be hard pressed to find any of the major cabinet builders product that I would say "sucks". I think it's an awesome time in the history of bass cabs, and it only looks to get better! Just my two pennies!

Well they sound good to some people and not to others. Can you imagine that? Remember when they were the new kids on the block and there were 3K+ of posts and views and people were selling their perfectly good gear to get it. Well I'm glad that that was the first and last time that has happened.....based on hearsay from people you don't know and whose opinions you trust with your thousands of dollars:)

This thread has completely confused me...I have no idea how Schroeder's sound now!
Not so suprising really.

Everyone has a "sound in their head" and everyone's head is, well, different. While we may have some common experience among us, the reality is that we are all constructed, and develop, slightly differently.

Hard enough to find a common ground regarding what something sounds like, let alone find a common vernacular with which to describe something so subjective so that everyone can understand exactly what it is that someone else hears. It's like mens' taste in women. There are some women we men would all agree are absolute drop-dead gorgeous, but there are many others over whom we would disagree as to how attractive we would find them. It is these differences that can only be accounted for based on our own biological programming and development.

But one thing is clear: No one should feel bad (especially to the point of anger or hostility) for not liking something that many other's like. For better or for worse, I think it is a natural human reaction for those on the outside of such a large and enthusiatic group of devote followers of anything to feel like there is something wrong with them for not "getting it." This sometimes leads to a need to attack aggressively to simply defend one's own tastes against the crowd. Morever, it seems also a natural response of humans in a large group to affirm their common beliefs as a defense mechanism in response to those who question them.

Come on everyone, find what makes you happy, and feel good about that! Like several posters in this thread have said, lot's of awesome equipment out there to make everyone happy and to produce a broad range of sound we can all appreciate.

Frankly, I love Schroeder cabs, although I must say that I prefer the 21012 far more than the 1210. For my tastes, the 1210 is little too high-middy, at least given the preamps/amp I am using. My 21012R has, IMHO a huge and tight low-end and does have a more mellow high end. Personally, I like that voicing very much. However, when I heard the 1212R AB'd with the 1212L I loved the way the 1212L provided more presence at the high-end without compromising much if any of its low-end response. What I REALLY loved was the way the two sounded together! The overlap in the two voicings seemed to open an even broader sound.

So I now envision a big gig rig that has a PLX3002 or 3402 driving both of my 21012s to get that overlap in voicing that I heard between the 1212 R and L together. I am giddy with anticipation! :hyper:

Even as a Schroeder afficionado, I also concede that the Schroeder sound, like the voicings of different guitars, may not be perfect for all applications. What cab really is? So I look forward to a day when I can be like Tombowlus and have two of everything!!:bassist: :D

My 1212r and epi 410ul two very different sounding cabs but I like them both. I find when I eq them I tend to try to enhance the aspects I like about the epi in the schroe and vice versa. They also sound fantastic together.

I defintely would like to have an Epi and a Berg cab at some point.

That's the thing, you can't make a cab that is perfect for everything. Great example eK!

I definitely agree, but the views on this thread are even more opposed than usual...I understand when one person will call amp "A" sterile, while another person will call it clean and hi-fi. On the other hand one person may call amp "B" warm and fat, while someone else will call it slow and mushy. This all makes sense, people are hearing the same thing, its just a matter of personal taste. But in this Schroeder thread, it seems like people are hearing the exact opposite things!

Yeah, it sure seems that way, doesn't it? I guess it could be any number of things, including poor choice of adjectives, they got a bad cab, etc.

I frankly find the Schroeder low end to be anything but mushy, but that may all be relative to the cabs I have heard compared to the person who said that.

Anyway, that flame top on that Peavy shore is hot dude! I think THAT is something we can ALL agree on!:bassist:

With the "Hope" of getting me off of my bad habit 31 band eq. I found that the 550 combined with the Schroeder 410R and new Stingray double pickup doesn't need the graphic to sound how I envision nice tone to sound, even with the 5 selector switch on traditional stingray setting.

With my MIke Lull bass the focus head with schroeder 1210 or 410 and the Graphic is the better sounding combination. Can't get the Eden and J bass sound to work together....yet.....maybe with enough time on the parametric I can work things out....the tone isn't "ugly" by any means, but whatever the Graphic/sonic Max combo is doing, combined with what the AI "isn't" well, it just sounds more like my flavor, but not with the stringray.

My point as it's been in many of the former thread's posts is that how everyone envisions the ideal bass tone is different for everyone.....obviously....but that tone is accomplished by having the right combination of ingrediants. Ken mentioned WW's not "sounding" right with a Schro 1210 I believe but the T Funk does sound to his liking and some others. Someone else doesn't think the TF and/or Focus and 1210 or other sounds good, but is it those two combo's in a vacuum or do you have to look at the guitar and the player too? Is it a lack of adjustability, or someone's playing technique, or inability/lack of experience in adjusting a paramtetric or pickups (my problem I guess amoung others!!) Or is it the particular brand of pickups or preamp.....or as it is shown here, it's just I like my flavor of ice cream and you like your's even though if you took a group of independent taste testers they might feel our ice cream tastes exactly the same. People's tastes are different...I totally accept that fact...period end of story.

I don't feel that the Schroeder enthusiasts or in some of our cases "overenthusiasts" are any more or less so than the New York Sadowsky crowd is towards their taste. But I do feel that if you take a NYC Sadowsky and match to the wrong combination of amp and speaker and technique, as I did, you can just as easily have a disgruntled, non-believer in the "magic" as with the Schroeders. It's not for everyone....agreed.

But you gotta look at the entire picture, one's entire rig....each component contributes to your tone matching your "envisioned ideal" one, and the sum of your parts gotta work for you. If that includes or doesn't include Schroeder or Sadowsky or some other brands with a big time loyal following or a total unknown, well....that's how it goes bro.

Jeez!! Me Too!! Until today I had a great sonic picture of Schroe's and wishing I hadn't invested in my speaker setup as heavily as I have, but now.............?

So, are there any cabs out there that claim to put out that miracle,HUGE, sound from a sub compact, ultra lightweight box?

I too was very anxious to give the Schroeders a try after all stories here on TB, but as always it turned out: you really need to try out for yourself. To be honest, they aren't for me either. Several people in this thread already described the sound as having a very pronounced (high-)mid range and I agree with them. I tried it out with my vintage SVT and didn't like the combo at all. I was very impressed by how it handled the low B at high volumes though, and I also liked the size and weight, but I didn't like the sound.

Also finally got the chance to check out the Avatar Neo's, and I liked them very much. The 112 and 210 couldn't handle the low B, but the 410 did a very good job. It also looked nice, it's very light and really good bang for the buck! I didn't like the tweeter at all, but that's ok because I'm not gonna use it anyway.

Long story short: it's been said over and over, but it's all about personal taste and preference. I think Schroeders very much have a sound of their own, so go hear for yourself.

I'm not confused at all. If you take out the one or two quite strange posts about 'hollow' and 'no punch'... the other 4,000 or 5,000 are in remarkable agreement on the sound of these cabs:D ... whether the poster likes them or not.

These are the loudest small cabs by far, and it you like the super punchy sound (which you may or may not), then these cabs are totally amazing.... the 1210 and 1212, through my direct experience, put out similar sound to two of most other manufacturers' similar size cabs.

The 1210 and 1212 are the only very small cabs that I've ever owned or played that can totally cover a loud gig. While I too somewhat prefer the sound of a few other 210 or 112 size cabs made by other manufacturers, that doesn't matter much if you are buried on the gig, does it:cool:
