Why do all basses seem to look so uninspired and the same (in a bad way)

Fender Reverse Jaguar Bass. released in 2012 only, but they are around. I just bought a nos one on ebay for a little over 800.
Really though I think some of it is just necessity. Because of the context for which it was created, it needs to be portable, held close enough to be manipulated by both hands in order to manipulate string length and expression, and able to be amplified.
That dictates much of the design.
It seems to be the same with classical string instruments. Many of the changes in design are largely cosmetic to all but the most discerning listener.

SBMM Stingray, Fender Meteora [higher than budget]
There are lots of 'Weird' shapes out there but I don't know your weird or like weird shaped Basses
so not much help other than suggest maybe you find a Band that will let you play Guitar

I like them. Have owned 3 total. Sold my first 2 of them years ago, just wanting to try other things. Missed it enough to just buy another yesterday on ebay. They are 32 inch scale (medium scale). If you're into the thunderbird thing, or fenderbird as some say, this is a good take on one. With correct strap, neck dive isn't an issue for me as some will state on these. Go to ebay an search, you will see 2 for sale from same seller (not me). He had 3 nos ones in storage since new (2012) and is now selling them. I got the black one on the way.
Also go look at Eastwood basses. Lots of interesting and cool designs, for not crazy money.

You complain about "all basses", but you're talking about a price range, $400-$600 new, where your subject line really should have been "Why do all cheap, commodity basses look the same?". And there are reasonable answers to that question. If you don't want a cheap, commodity bass, you'll have to pay for something better, and perhaps more interesting.
Yeah I'll admit the title was a bit clickbait but I wanted people to click so I could get answers (I wasn't too sure what the response rate here was like, pretty damn high it turns out)
