+1 on a Squire P, 90% of the quality and utility of an MIA at 50% of the price. I'm Meh on P's, but they have their niche. Recently developing GAS for a sunburst P with tort guard, a classic, though I'll always prefer a J.

I feel like people buy basses out of two things : either by the pressure that everyone else is using one and so you need to to be part of the group or because you want to sound like those old record where you had 4 choice of basses ( Fender P, Fender Jazz, Rickanbacker and Hofner violin bass ).

This is the truth. Artistic musical expression has always been best done through conformity just like all artistic expression.

I don't think there are any Fender (P only) P basses still offered with a J neck. Is there?

The MIM Nate Mendel P bass has a neck that is a little wider than a J, but narrower than a normal P. it comes with a Duncan Quarter Pounder. My brother has one. He strung it with half rounds. He LOVES that bass.

I didn't find it difficult at all to play a P-bass after playing J-basses exclusively for almost fifty years. However, when I discovered that the P-bass truss rod was broken, I replaced it with a MIM '62 reissue J-bass neck so that it would feel like my two J-basses. The neck feel between a P and J base is a subtle difference, but it is different.

I think you may be right. I learned to play on a pre-CBS P, but that was a long ago that I don't remember how it felt. The P-bass I replaced the neck on is a USA '95 Precision, which is a little wider than the Jay, but not that much. 1-5/8" Vs. 1-1/2" at the nut, I think.

My favorite thing about the P is the simplicity. I'm amazed how much you get done with one split coil and moving your plucking hand. I find it much more intuitive than playing with knobs, which leads me to pay more attention to playing the music (as opposed to playing the instrument).

Well stated. The Precision becomes subconsciously "transparent" to me, allowing me to concentrate on the SONGS.
