Why do people become product brand fanatics?

I see no issues in liking a particular brand or brands. Taking shots at other brands is another issue altogether.

The Chevy vs. Ford thing is the worst example. Everytime I see a vehicle with a bumper sticker cartoon caricature of "Calvin" peeing on the other guy's brand I can't help but think the owner of the vehicle must be some kind of caveman.

Another example is fast food restaurants. McDonalds vs. Burger King.

Seriously? It's funny to me that there are actually fast food fanatics who praise one and despise the other.

I like the brand t-shirts. Shouldn't you be paying me to advertise your product? Greatest scam around. "Here plaster these stickers all over your stuff, wear this hat and t-shirt too. Now pay me." Guess I'm just as gullible. I've a ton of old shirts and hats with nothing but logos.

another half-formed thought:

in the old days, you'd bash an antelope over the head and bring it home, thus feeding your dependents and proving your worth as a member of the group.

these days you find the most effective brand of wood sealant/carpet shampoo/cheese and present it proudly, the grizzled hunter back from the plains with his can of Ronseal and tale of great parking-based hardship and heroism.

Do you folks actually call them GMC and label them as such? I was under the impression the "C" was added when GM put a branch in Canada so they could get around Canadian laws.

Seriously, I don't get it. It's like people supporting a football team or insisting that their favorite singer is best. Why do consumers have to talk up their preferred brand by discrediting the competition? I sometimes wonder just who brand fanatics are trying to convince...

I think a more pertinent question might be....."Why do people become activist brand name haters?" What social disorder compels them? Low self esteem? Abused as children?

I retired from my day job in September of 2009. Since then I have been playing music, teaching lessons and flipping gear for fun and profit.

Almost every day I wear some kind of logo shirt, whether it be Fender, DW, Ampeg, Zildjian, Gretsch. I do this for a reason.

There is a local singer/songwriter that I met while buying ceramic tile for our home renovation. He and his wife own a tile store, we struck up a conversation because I was wearing a Zildjian shirt. He and I have been gigging together since 2010.

More times than I can count I've been wearing a drum or cymbal shirt and been approached by a mom or dad. "Do you teach drum lessons?" "Yes, as a matter of fact I do." I get my students through word of mouth or because of a conversation about the "logo shirt" that I'm wearing.

My favorite is this...

I was sitting in a doctor's office waiting for my wife, a woman saw my "Ampeg" t-shirt and asked, "Do you play bass? My son moved to California after college and we have a ton of his old gear. Do you know anyone that would be interested in buying it?" It ended up being a bass, a bass amp, two guitars and a guitar amp, and yes, I did ended up buying all of it to flip. Another time my wife and I were eating breakfast in a diner and the waitress asked if I would be interested in buying her late father's PA, guitars and amps. I was and I did.

To me wearing a logo shirt is like a plumber or electrician driving a van advertising their business.
