Why do some find it funny to joke about mental retardation??

My wife and I will never have kids, why?
Because every time she sees a ******** person on tv she laughs her butt off and god will punish her one day.


In all reality, who the hell cares? It affects you in no way, this is how the world is, people say stupid things all the time. What you find distasteful others might be ok with. It is a matter of opinion, there is nothing immoral or wrong about it.
Find something better to do with your time other than complaining about what other people do, worry about yourself, take care of your own responsibilities and stop trying to police the other 12 billion people on this rock.

I'm 1/2 deaf, do I condemn family guy for the greased up deaf guy? No.

Once upon a time, people didn't spend so much energy on getting offended. That's why words like "dumb" and "lame" are used all the time, even by people who claim offense at "********" and "gay", but no one cares, and mute and crippled people and their advocates don't get outraged. The same thing would happen to terms like "********" and "gay" if people would just let them. They'd slip into a form of usage where people don't even think about mentally handicapped or homosexual people when using them, just like the terms "dumb" and "lame."

everyone gets laughed at and criticised and i laugh when it's funny. i don't care who it's directed at,... gay, straight, handicapped, mentally challenged, short, or tall, black or white!
btw the way, have you heard the one about the "white ******** gay midget" and the "black guy in the wheel-chair"???
of course you have,... and it was funny as hell.
on the other hand, its not cool the make fun of someone to be mean-spirited.

So talking is bad but violence is OK? That's ****ed up!

When I say "There's a dufus at the end of the song", I don't mean the drummer. Usually. But the PC crowd has gotten so bad that our singer giggles when I say that, even though it is an original, correct usage of the word. People don't like to be called "special" any more, either. Jeesh!

And am I'm hearing a lot of prejudice against "normal" people, saying they can't love as well?

Time for all of ya to get over yerselves. None of you are special, in any way.

It is just like asking

"Why do people make jokes about different races"

"Why do people make jokes about different religions"

"Why do people make jokes about the opposite sex"

"Why do people make jokes about peoples sexuality"


Because they are different and that is usually about the only thing the person making the joke can come up with to one up whoever it is aimed at.

i started using my drummer's name in place of words.

"now remember guys.....second time through, there's a Mike after the third measure"

"one sec guys, i gotta go take a Mike"

A lot of heartfelt responses here. To me the term has been not only been inoculated, but it is rather dated. Me, personally, as a teacher, when I hear a kid say it in class, I sometimes discipline it, and sometimes I don't. I tend to look at the context. For better or worse, it has become a common adjective to describe a thoughtless, dumb act, or a person who commonly commits said acts, outside of it's normal definition of 'slow' or 'impeded'. IMO, society doesn't even refer to people who are mentally challenged as '********' any more. Ignorant people will always say and do ignorant things, and oddly enough the people we describe as '********' are often the people who use the word the most.

Still, as far as causes to rally behind, I would say there are a lot more important and relevant things to worry about, rather than the political correct policing of an outdated derogatory term.

I have a son with autism. He's considered high functioning but may not ever be self sufficient. Watching these kids grow up struggling with things we take for granted puts a new perspective on life. I have absolutely no tolerance for anybody who would pick on, make fun of, or laugh at somebody who has a PDD (personal development disorder).
