Why do you drink?

Ggvicviper's thread got me a-thinkin' and I didn't want to derail his. So, why do you drink? At this point I'm pretty sure that I drink with the expressed purpose of getting buzzed or drunk.

That sounds pretty bad but I honestly can't think of any other reason I would. Alcohol makes pretty much everything taste worse to me so I would never do it "just because" or for the taste. Drinks with alcohol can still taste good but they always taste better without, in my experience. I want the effect - plain and simple. I want it as quickly as possible, in the most easily drinkable package. If I don't feel like getting a little loose I won't have anything alcoholic.

I can't just have a casual beer, well I can but it would have casually lead up to me being tipsy later on. I have to plan it out. I have to be sure that the drink will do something for me and that I'm actually in a position to drink reasonably. Too early? Might have to do something, won't drink. Too late? Might be sleeping soon, won't drink. Alternatively, I'd have to drink too much too fast to be drunk a decent amount of time before I sleep and I have no interest in puking.

Yeah, so... thread title. GO!

Life is not fun for many people. Drinking lets them forget that for a while. I think most people who drink a lot self-medicate.

And the taste can be wonderful but is acquired. Most five year olds only want to eat kraft dinner, ketchup, and oreos. As we grow and learn to develop a pallet-- lots of wonderful, complex flavors become available to us. A well-made beer, IMO is a hell of a lot better than any soda ever invented or any commercial fruit juice you'll ever drink.

edit* also, this is probably about 90% of it:

Alcohol is the source of casual sex.

I like the taste of many alcoholic drinks, but abhor the taste of many others as well. I really really love my strong bitter beers, but am kind of repulsed by the taste of sugary sweet drinks. So I would say I drink for the taste in most situations.

When it comes to parties however, I drink like a dehydrated fishy that loves all liquids equally. Why? I love drinking and getting completely **** faced with friends. I do incredibly stupid things while **** faced, or I convince others to do stupid things. I am very very good at getting drunk people to do what they would never dream of sober. Why? Because I'm young so it doesn't hit me the next day as much as it will in a few years, I love having a good time where entertaining events happen, and the stories I'll tell in later years wont be I sat on my butt and did nothing in college. They'll be epic.

Plus hooking up when your drunk is a hell of a lot less awkward than when your sober, and quantity>quality right now.

When alone, my main reason for drinking is to pair with food (because I like the taste) or simply eating/drinking out of boredom.

With friends I usually drink to take off some of my rougher edges and inhibitions, which can actually lead to some interesting (and depending on exactly how many I've had) intelligent conversations.

I suppose I don't have the healthiest of habits in either case. :(

I agree with both points. I think it might be the only way to justify some of the "beers" I've had, and most of the hard liquor I seem to come across. I agree with kwesi in that I hate the taste of alcohol, but I do really enjoy a good beer. I've recently tried Coors banquet and MGD (both from the US), and I have to say - it helps me put the US beer industry into perspective, and really helps me see why a US craft beer tends to be excessively flavoured (there's a lot of great stuff in the US, but I find some of it to be too flavourful, if that makes sense).

Either way Kwesi, a lot of people drink with your mindset, at least at our age (I'm assuming that you're 20-ish like me). Drinking booze isn't something that's enjoyed in and of itself, it's just a means to an end, and most of the booze that you taste will probably reflect that purpose. As for me, I like to get a light buzz every now and then, but it's generally locally made ontario/michigan craft beer for me, as I have a low tolerance for drunk people and don't like getting very drunk myself. I'm not sure where you are Kwesi, but the US has a great thriving craft beer industry, and you could probably find a good witbier/hefeweizen that you'd probably genuinely enjoy, I find that some witbiers are a bit heavily spiced for me to drink a whole pint of, but they're a generally well-balanced, non bitter, and very refreshing style of beer to drink and on a hot summer day they're very refreshing. If it didn't have to travel over the US border to do so, I would send you some mill st. lemon tea beer in the mail. Finding the right beer, or wine, or liquor, can change your opinion on booze in general.

A story worth telling...

The absolute only time I have ever gotten completely smashed by myself was during a 6 Hour George Carlin HBO special marathon. I kept laughing and drinking, and laughing and drinking. The more I had, the funnier Carlin seemed to get, and the more I laughed, the more I wanted to drink. Twas quite a vicious circle when I think about it.

Kwesi, who do you drink with? A lot of what constitutes me drinking and having a good time while drinking (and therefore becoming said fishy), is hanging around good friends and a fun natured crowd. A lot of the parties around here (Pueblo especially) are filled with a bunch of meat-headed jocks who only want to fight and show of the size of their cocks (figuratively). I don't ever party with those kinds of ******** if I can help it. Sometimes they just show up, and I'm sober in two seconds flat.

My favorite type of people are the ones who are their for the express purpose of not wanting to do anything but drink and laugh for the next few hours. The ones who show their cocks (literally) just to get the girls to take off their shirts for the rest of the night. Hookups happen, embarrassing pictures are taken, the stoners find their corner, the heavy drinkers play games into the night, and everyone wakes up in the morning thinking what a hell of a ****ing party that was. Then it goes down as one of the best they've been to, and that we have to beat it. That night never happens again, but a whole new set of situations and naked girls happens. More stories. Some are fuzzy at that point lol, but that's what makes them awesome.

Will I keep this lifestyle after college? Prolly not. But for now, it's fun, and as long as no one gets hurt, I'm ok with it. Their have been situations where fights have broken out (but they were calmed pretty quickly with the ******** getting kicked out or taken home), situations where drunk klutzes have wrecked into dressers, chairs and the like (but never driven, we don't mess with that. your drunk, your passing out on the couch, no exceptions), and situations of cheating girls and guys. You really learn quickly who really stands for the stuff they say they believe in, and who are a bunch of hypocrites (and sloots).

ok this is what i think

no one drinks to get drunk, thats an outcome

no one drinks because they like the taste, thats an excuse

drinking is just another drug that doesnt need a prescription and people use it to self medicate

and yeh thats what i use it for, to sooth the nerves but most people wont admit to using it this way as it shows a weakness which we think we dont have.
