I just came home from a week of winery visits in the Napa Valley and Sonoma. Turns out after sampling a dozen Cabernets my mouth becomes numb and they all start to taste the same.

Wine, beer, martinis or single malt scotch depending on my mood. I can't remember the last time I got drunk but the occasional wine buzz is a nice thing.

I drink because I like the taste. Wasn't that way at first. I drank because other people pushed me into it (family). Got over that though.

Now, I brew my own beer. I get to be creative with it. So far I've only had one batch I've thought about pouring down the drain. Had a friend introduce me to homebrewing that won several state level contests, so I had a good start. First batch got me hooked. When you taste the good stuff, it's real easy to just sit back and sip a good one.

I drink the occasional scotch on the rocks to relax in the evening.

I'll drink the occasional 3-4 beers when hanging out with friends so I will loosen up and have fun, because I'm naturally quiet and reserved.

I don't drink to get drunk anymore. I don't like the spinny feeling or the headache or the stupid crap that I say.

I drink because I like both the taste and the buzz. Same goes for non-alcoholic drinking (coffees and teas). Otherwise, I just drink water.

As I get older (44) my body is sort of forcing me to do things differently. Red wine aggravates my stomach... no more red wine (boo!)... Really sweet mixed drinks and beers do the same - no great loss, I don't really like sweet beers or super-sweet mixed drinks.

I normally have some stout or very hoppy beer in my beverage fridge and I usually grab one when I get home from work to drink while I either make dinner or chill and decompress. Lately I've stopped doing that - and I am not even really sure why. Not a conscious choice - I didn't say to myself "Hmmm, I think I should stop drinking..." but for some reason I am just not interested. I am sort of pleased, but since I don't know why I know that next week it could all go right back to normal which is no problem - but I am sort of curious as to why I all of a sudden lost my taste for my post-work drink...

That said, I LOVE getting together with my friends for drinks - and like others have said, what we drink is really not as important as who we drink with.

I dont think thats actually a Steven Wright quote. It could be, but it seems a little low brow in comparison to what Ive seen of Wright's standup. So, I googled the quote, and there are some sites that attribute the quote to him, but then Ive also found one that attributes it to Groucho Marx, and another that gives the credit to HL Mencken. Trivia from the movie 'The Adjustement Bureau' says the quote is Paul Newman's.

So, does anyone know who the quote actually came from?

I love the taste of a good bourbon (or rye), and I also enjoy the buzz but not to the point of drunkeness. I like comparing the different mashbills, proofs, and ages of good bourbons. But as much as I love a good bourbon or rye, I never cared much for beer or other whiskies like Canadian, Irish, or Scotch. I used to love tequila, but after I fell in love with bourbon I don't really care much for tequila anymore.
