Why do you drink?

I drink. More than I should. I drink for several reasons. I enjoy the high. I am somewhat introverted and socially awkward among large groups of people. Alcohol provides a nice degree of social lubrication. I also enjoy the taste. I love good beer (and some cheap beer), I also enjoy the taste of many hard liquors. There's also the conviviality aspect of it. Not "peer pressure" at all, but something of a social bonding, kind of like the office coffee break.

I rarely drink anymore, but when I do it's usually Dos Equis.

Wait...no, it's usually wine or liquor. I drink for taste most of the time and the buzz that comes with it is a nice side effect. I used to drink to the point of stupidity in college, usually just whatever we had on hand which was often Natty Light. Those days are behind me, but I had fun at the time. Nowdays it's all bourbon, cognac, whiskey and wine.

I love good beer and wine. I do drink them for the taste, believe it or not. Wine that hasn't fermented is just grape juice - I by far prefer the more subtle or bitter flavors, I guess (I don't dump cream and sugar to ruin my coffee, either). Harder drinks I'll occasionally have but I'm not too into them.

I usually have a glass of one or the other with dinner, and often stretch it out till I go to bed (one drink, I mean - I'm a sipper). At a bar or a party that's going to go on for a while I will usually indulge in a second drink. Only a handful of times in my life have I gone on to a third or actually gotten drunk. I'm pretty content with that, being neither an alcoholic nor a teetotaller.

I'm of mixed opinion about the "social lubricant" or "liquid courage" dimension. It's not a part of why I drink, though if others at a social gathering are having a beer I'm happy to join them. I never really felt that people should need alcohol to relax or to express themselves or have fun. There was one time at a wedding reception when my wife and I got up and were dancing and being generally silly, and the bride says to us, "Wow, you guys must be really drunk!" To which my wife replied (honestly), "I'm drinking lemonade!" On the other hand, even the Bible (no big friend of serious drunkenness) has a verse that says God made wine to make the heart glad (ps 104:15). So maybe, in moderation, that's a legit part of what it's about.

Let It Fall said:
I cannot stand the taste of beer and haven't had my first real drinks till I was 22 now 23

I do it socially cause in a real uptight nervous person and it makes me not give a damn.

But I really love nothing more than drinking by myself.. Actually my favorite thing to do is have something strong and just sit or lay down. Sorry I never smoked weed or anything do this is like a high for me.

You......... should probably quit. This is not good at all.

Because it's the only socially acceptable way to alter one's mind.

Note: I don't consider it the best way to alter one's mind,...but it is the only way to do it without serious legal repercussions,....unless you do something dumb,...like drive drunk,...or beat your wife.

I have work until 3 today, then I teach until 7 tonight. When I get home I'm already preparing to crack open several Dogfish Heads.

I like this beer btw. Had some on tap and they were giving away pint glasses too. Win Win. Did you go to Bear Republic and look for a distributor of Racer 5 in your local area? Hit them up on Facebook. They're good guys. Small company. If still no luck then I'll send you one, but you have to pay for the shipping, and you're going to get a pic of my @$$ with it. Hopefully, I can get some horribly wrong and hairy distention going just to scar your visual memory. Maybe a well developed dingle-berry or two. Sound good?

Alcohol is fine in moderation. I enjoy a cold one, a belt, or a mixed drink some evenings. Unless you enjoy spending thousands in court fees fines and lawyers and enjoy jail food, don't mind every relationship you have to sour and fail, ill health, and the distinct possibility of harming or killing some one. I'd recommend that if you can't drink responsibly, you should just not drink. And if your drinking to get drunk, your not drinking responsibly.

Right. Because everybody who gets drunk turns into a mindless killing and abuse machine.
