As my son wanted to play guitar, I bought an instrument to complement.

Answer is still no. (And I still can’t play guitar more than copping a few power chords.)

The bass player gets all the chicks, isn’t it?![]()
Band needed a drummer, so I sat down and started playing drums. There's just something about this instrument -- the bass guitar. What attracted you to it in the first place? Was it the low sound? Did someone who already played inspire you? Or was it just that a band needed a bass guitar player? It seems that musicians have affinity to a certain instruments -- so for you, why bass? For me....the sound!
My left hand was severely burned when I was a baby. The scarring prevented me from being able to make chord shapes on a guitar, but a four string bass felt just right.
I burned my hand in a frying pan full of tugboat potatoes when I was as 18 months old. When I was 16 and already playing bass for several years, I had my second of two reconstruction surgeries and they were able to get my fingers to move normally. Before the operation my index and middle fingers had scar tissue that kept them from straightening out. They would get about halfway and then ‘pop’ into full extension.Interesting. I also have a hand injury that prevented me from playing guitar.
After an initial frustration I felt a eureka moment and urgently went to my local pawn store and bought a bass. I played a little and then started to “hear” bass lines and was hooked.
I’ve since gone back to guitar, figured out some work arounds and can play just fine.
