Currently I do not play more than 4 but I would like to play more than 4 so I can have more low notes. Detuning my E string just doesn't cut it. I'm just too poor at the moment for a 5 string.

Why does any of this matter? Basses are only tools, they are only what you make them. More strings= greater range, simple as that, identifying yourself by a material object is just plain stupid.

I like being able to play a shorter scale note between low E and B2, as well as having longer scale notes between low B and E.

I also like playing my bass between the 7th and 12th fret, as it can get nice and fuzzy...

...while still having the option to drop big phat bombs.

more range? not so much.
More texture?
More wood?
more spring from another string?

Maybe he isn't but I am. Contrary to popular belief Jaco is not the end all be all of bass. Give it a rest.

I know this is a bit of an old thread now, but I had to share this classic conversation I just had with a very cool (but clearly impressionable) young friend:

him: "No one really uses that B string do they?"

me: "Actually I use it about as much as I use the G."

him: "Oh really? Uh ... but I find the strings are just too close for playing slap."

me: "Hey cool, I didn't know you played slap."

him: "I ... don't."

I like 5string because there is less position shifts which makes reading easier.
I don't play six string instruments because I have not hear a good C string yet

I play a dropped tuned 5-string (A,D,G,C,F). My guitar players both play Ibanez 7-strings (drop tuned A,D,G,C,F,A,D)


We play a heavy rock style, Keys two guitars, bass and drums - It works good with the range playing along with the keys. Gives diversity!

I play a 6er because i love the added mid range and the low b comes in way handy with just about anything you do. Plus we all know fretted notes sound better than open and i like to eliminate the open E in any music i play.

Yep ... for some people their bass choice becomes a "cult" ... I was on another forum and the hate that was directed at me was incredible ...

I posted:

-5 string basses are better than 4 string basses
-newer basses are better than old vintage basses
-active basses are better than passive

and this one really got them hateful:

-my Frankensteined jazz bass is better than my Rickenbacker

Because I like having a baritone tuned A-A at my disposal, when I need to do guitar like parts, beside my traditional 4 string bass.

I played for a group that played a lot of songs in F. So either you are playing 4th sting 1 st fret, or 3rd string at 8th fret. The 5 worked perfect. The small mainly acoustic venue I play, a 5 does not fit. So the Fender p comes out to play!
